Springfield GI .45 or Mil-Spec?
« on: April 20, 2005, 05:39:45 AM »
Hey guys,  I am looking into buying a springfield for my first 1911.  I want to keep the cost low and get kind of a piece of history too.  I have read many good things on the forum about springfields.  But I don't understand the difference in the SPringfield GI .45 and the Mil-Spec models.  There is also a MSRP price diffeence of about $100.  What the difference?  Thanks for all the help.

I have the GI version and it has functioned very well. There are others here that know much more about them, but the Mil-Spec version has better sights, flared and lowered ejection port, and, I think, a beveled magazine well. Could be other differences that I am not aware of. I have the 4" Champion and 5" full size in the GI spec. and both can shoot better than I can. This was my first 1911 size, also. Have never owned any other brands so have nothing to compare them with. You should get some definite opinions here, though. Have fun with whatever you decide.

I have the Mil-spec and it is a step above the GI. The GI is more for those that want the old WWII look.  :D

I have a 16 year old SA Mil Spec.  Back then, they came with the GI style sights.  You are basically paying for the sights, lowered ejection port, and beveled magwell.  Is it worth the premium? Probably, if you like or desire those features.  It will cost you more to have the modifications made to a GI model afterwards.  For a first 1911, its a toss up.  You start out with less into the pistol with the GI, but the larger sights might prove useful when learning to shoot the best handgun design in history.

Well I did it, I bought the SA GI .45!  For my first 1911 I am very happy!  It looks good, shoots good, just awesome.  I really like the US grips and the lanyard ring.  Thanks for all the replies and opinions.

Yeah, thoughs are awesome!    I love thoughs grips. I have a pair on order, just to have. I dont have a 1911 they would look as good on as the GI. But, Ill find something to put them on.

Ummmm. Maybe I should just get the GI.  8) I think I put the cart before the bull.

Any-how great pick. Have fun with her. Hope your happy, I would be.

                             Good shooting.

It was good to note the rather positive remarks concerning the SA GI-45 since I just plunked down the money for one.  Just waiting for my state police background check to clear so that I can pick it up and get it out to the range.

I have the same (SA GI).  I've since added Hogue grip panels and a dab of gold paint to the front blade for better visibility.  With over 1,000 rounds through it (about 100 today after work), it's still functions great.  I use it for CCW with Cor-Bon ammo.  Great choice...congratulations.
