LSI PUMA in .45 Colt
« on: April 22, 2005, 01:39:01 AM »
Hello to  all. Last Sunday I fired some standard pressure loads in this rifle. 250gr XTP ; 10.9grs VV N350; starline case; Win LP primer. The VV manual says 14000psi. The cases come out expanded almost the same as if I was using 24grs of 296. Is this something to be concerned about as far as case life or anything else? Why do these guns come out with such large chambers? Thanx for any feedback, jd45

jd45 They make the rear of the chamber a little oversize to help the round feed better. Sometimes too much, I sent one back 7 weeks ago for repair and have not gotten it back yet. (M&M gunsmithing) in Va. Mine would not seal all the time and I would get blowback on my face sometimes while shooting  factory ammo.

You know, I'm really tempted to send it to Steve Young in Port Arthur, TX, who's a Rossi '92 speciatist, & have him clip the chamber end of the barrel off & re-chamber it to .483-.484". jd45

Does anyone know if the LSI .454's have the same problem?

I don't know if the 454's have the same problem, but from reading on another leveraction forum, I take it that this is not uncommon with 45 Colt chambers on both rifles and revolvers.  The recommendations posted there were to neck size the 45 Colt rounds only after their first firing.

BTW I've ordered an EMF/Rossi from Steve Young in 45 Colt.  It should be here in a month or so.

I spoke to Steve Young about the larger chambers in the Rossis and he said that some of the milder cowboy loads wouldn't expand the stiff brass (Remington is one) to seal the chamber.  He confirmed that it was usually nothing to worry about and to try just neck sizing the brass.
