Need'in Your Profesional Opinion
« on: April 22, 2005, 06:11:06 PM »
I am considering my first 1911. I will definantly stick to the full size G.I. style. I can't afford a Colt so I have it narrowed down to two choices. Either a Khar Arms Auto Ordnance WWII parkarized or a Springfield G.I. in stainless. The Khar is made in the USA but it is not stainless. The Springfield is stainless but is not made in the USA(although final machineing and fitting is done in the USA wich is comforting). You can see my chalenge. The gun will be carried in a flap holster around a ranch do'in chores and shootin varmints and may used to plug a couple big halibut in Alaska this summer and also some plink'in every once and a while. I want a gun that is pretty accurate and can take abuse(hence the stainless) rain or shine, and is VERY reliable. I am leaning tward the Springfield but I need your advice. Also do you know where is a good place to order one from online through my local gunshop?

Thanks so much

I do not own either.
I would buy the SA though from reports all over the internet, gunsmiths to knowledgeable "others".
I like stainless, but , I also am in a minority on this choice.

Given your applications I wonder why you would want to carry a 1911. I'd pick something better suited to hunting and the taking of animals. I don't know if you live in a cold climate, but reliability in cold weather is likely to be an issue with the auto too. Have you considered any revolvers?

Now dont get me wrong, I have shoot some smaller game with my 1911s in .45. But I do not feel it is a good hunting round and I would not rely on it for a sure hunting shot. The 1911 is best suited for 2 legged animals that come in your windows at night. I hate to say it to, i love the 1911s and would take them over any handgun made and I time and time agin.

But, if you want a 1911 and you have your personal reasons for wanting one, or you really think it is what you need in a handgun, Im all for that and I do not want to try to change your mind. So, I would go with Springfield. Im to the point now were that is all I will shoot in 1911s. I have 2 Kimbers left and by Monday they will be gone. Im not sure what Ill replace them with yet, but there are a few more Springfields on my list.

I think you will be happy with the Springfield, but before you buy rule out all of you options. Dont for get about some really nice 10MM, 41MAG and 44MAG. rev. out there that would make good sidearms too and most in the 1911s price range if you keep your eyes open.

I think the sights on the 1911 GI will hurt you the most. The old style. The sights on a REV. might be a little more suited for taking a game shot.

Thanks guys,

I'm sure I will go with the Springfield.

I already own and have owned revolvers and love them. I am actually a revolver guy alot more than an auto guy, but I have realy been wanting a 1911 and my 8 3/8" 629 is a little bulky to carry around. I wont realy be hunting with the 1911, well big game anyway, just shootin at the occasional coyote and plinkin at sage rats. It will also be carried while hiking for defense against cougers and more likely the two legged criters.
As far as the climate issue I figured if it worked for the GI's in Bastone(spelling) in the winter of 1944 it will work fine for me in central Oregon. The only revolver I would consider is a 5.5" Redhawk .45 Colt or a 625 Mountain Gun if I could find one.

for cold weather,  clean your gun, get all the old lube off.    get you some fp-10,  lube, then wipe off all you can with a clean rag.  you will be fine.  this oil is amazing- the best stuff i have used yet.   my gun functioned fine @ 10 below zero.   i was going to try -20;  but had better things to do at the time (like staying inside where it is warm).    :)
you guys who havent tryed this stuff need to.

Springfield has a good reputation, but if you're spending in the neighborhood of $700 take a look at some Colts in stainless.  I have a couple and they shoot every time.  Heres one site...all the way to the bottom:

PS:  you might also like the Commander model with a 4" barrel since you mainly gonna be plinking and shooting critters.  One inch shorter than the regular Govt.

Get the Springfield, they are nicer than the Auto Ords. As far as corrosion resistance goes, you are going to have to pay attention to detail even with the stainless. Don't think that if you are in the rain you can just take a stainless auto and put it away. It WILL rust. With that in mind, I don't care for stainless guns.
