COMPLETED THE ATF FORM 4473 TO DAY
« on: April 23, 2005, 09:02:10 AM »
I stop at bass pro shop today in S.C. myrtle beach area and they had the 45-70 BC,all I have to say about the gun is well made, balance was excellent, but the 32 inch barrel turn me off,if the gun was 4 inches shorter I would have bought it,otherwise I really like the gun.
I did see the Handi they had 5 of them in 30-06 I was looking more for a caliber that is inexspensive to load and will work well ,I have loaded the 30-06 the last 35 years and just last year sold my A3-03 .I did own my springfield since 1968 and can say never lost a deer with Hornady 165 grain interlock bullets.
I did get a super deal on the gun,and going threw all 5 boxes for the best looking wood grain.Bass Pro shop price on the Handi was $199.00
I ask the saleman if they would match wallmart price of $189.00,he stated no problem, then I also open a bass pro credit card and they still reduce the gun another 10 percent, total for the Handi $170.00
I did also some research on the 45-70 the bullet is not a inexspensive bullet to load, the prices for dies, brass, and bullets are up there.I also thought since I shoot many flinter in 54 cal. and other m/l in 54 cal. there was no need for a heavy bullet, that my m/l will  do as well.
Man I have not filled a 4473 forum since the late 60's when marlins levers were $69.00 bucks, and remingtons BDL were $129.00

Congrats on the new .30-06!! You can still get the 45-70 BC at a later time....as a true Handi-holic would!!! If the 32" barrel is too long for ya, just have that 4" cut off, recrowned and a new dovetail cut in the muzzle, should be less than $100 for that to be done.....or just get the 38-55 which has a 28" barrel!!!

quickdtoo: I think it was the way to fly, like you said can allway get the 45-70 barrel fitted to the action.
I did like the handi due to the overall weight ,easy to carry afield.
I am going back up north in june seem I will but my BNZ 8x57 mauser up for sale full custom and kep the handi for a back up in bad weather or use it when hunting shot will have some distance .
I hope it shoot well going to try my same load that my springfield shot for years.
I was at the range yesterday and have a early renegade flinter made by t/c .I allways shoot the 380 conicals and 85 grains of goex 3f.
I was playing around and wanted to see whay the gun would do with a 530 RB ,last time out seem 85 grains a wonder wad and patch shot excellent, you know I jack that load to 100 grains of 3f goex and it tack drive them RB at the 50 yard target ,goes to show all gun are different and the 1 in 48 twist barrel will handle them heavy charges as wellas the 1 in 66 or slower barrel.
hope you don't mind the m/l post here.

I don't think anyone will mind, there are lots of ML shooters here...there are even a few that shoot black powder in their 45-70s!!!....which reminds me of Junior Doughty...
