I have two new handi rifles ( scope suggestion for .223)
« on: April 23, 2005, 02:52:47 PM »
Hi everyone, I got a new .223 ultra for christmas and it opened every time I fired. I sent it back to the factory a few weeks ago and it came back working fine! Good customer service I may add.I hear so much good from these rifles and didn't give up on my .223 so I bought a new .243 while waiting for repairs and used the scope from my .223 (3x9 nikon) I used a rubber O ring to free float the barrel and I got less than 3/4" groups at 100 yards. I have a couple of custom made rifles but I have fallen in love with these rifles. Now I have to buy a scope for the .223 Ultra with bull barrel :). I called Nef and they told me not to use any bullets greater than 55 grs because of twist rate. Well any suggestions for a scope for the .223 would help. Thanks so much

I've had good luck with Bushnel. Try the Banner scopes, you choose the power you want. And congrats on the purchase of your new Handi. I have a .243 Ultra and it shoots awesome 8)
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

Welcome aboard!! :D The scope choice depends on whatcha want to do with the .223....for a predator calling rifle where you'd be carrying it a lot, a smaller 3-9x or 4-12x would be more than enough, but for varmints and long range shooting, a 6-18x or 6-24x wouldn't be too much. Tell us more.....and how much you want to spend!!

Thank you Nuttin and Quick, Well I was thinking along the lines of long range and perhaps a good mill dot scope... well as far as how much do I wanna spend. I would be willing to spend up to 500.00 maby more. I have had it drilled in my head over the years from some of my friends optics make the rifle. I also would buy a scope for $200.00 if it did the job. I got the .223 for nothing as a gift so I figure I could spend a little more on a scope. I read some people use JB weld on the scope base and lock tight. I have some lock tight and JB weld. I did use lock tight on the base for my .243 I guess I wanna make rifle set up good. Thanks again

:D , Welcome aboard Norseman112, I am sure you will find what you seek here. On my .223 Bull barelled H&R I have a Simmons Whitetail Classic, 6.5-20x50 if my memory serves me well, It is a great scope for the money and although far from your $500 max at about $109 it works GREAT!!! Good luck and stop by often, there is much good info and friendship to be had here....<><....

Maybe it's because I never owned one, but I can't bring myself to spend enough for a Leopold, or something along those lines, and it doesn't seem to make sense that the scope would cost more than the rifle :D .

I did some looking, and found something like this:

Have a look and see what you think.

Well, for $200 I would recommend the 4-16x50IGR Mueller Tactical mildot with illuminated reticle, it's a 50mm AO scope, but since the Handis and Ultra scopes need to be mounted relatively high anyway due to the hammer, you might as well take advantage of the brighter view!! I have the 4-16x50IGR Sport Dot mounted on my .243 Ultra and the 8.5x25x50IGR Eraticator mounted on my .204 Ruger Ultra, the pic below is the .204, but the scopes look pretty much the same....

If you want to spend more money, I'd go for the Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 Mil dot from Jon at The Optic Zone...

Jon also has the best price on Mueller scopes and free shipping and sunshade of some models.

The best scope I own is a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40. I have it on my Savage 10 FP .223 and have consistently shot .500" and less. The clarity is superb and the Rainguard feature is awesome. At dusk, it performs very well which I think is the true test of a great scope. This scope was $410 and I will not hesitate to buy another one when the time comes. It came with a 4" sunshade which I use all the time.

Good luck with your choice and enjoy.

Thank you all for your help,

Those are some nice pics of your rifles Quick! That elite scope looks nice. I think I am going to try that Muller scope. I read the reviews and seems like it should be ok, then I can buy another handi like nuttin said  :-) .  Looks like I am going to need some high rings but thats ok. I am going to place my order today on the muller.  It will be a while before I have a range report but I will post them on here along with pics of my handi rifles. My buddys are all bolt action guys and I have some to, but I showed my one friend what my .243 has done and he is impressed! When I bought the .243 he said what in the heck do you want one of them for and now he is saying gee thats a pretty good rifle  :-)  Yes MSP I will keep comming back here, seems like alot of good people here and now that I am hooked on the Handi rifles
