Mixed results, .243, .44 mag
« on: April 24, 2005, 04:14:27 PM »
I got out to shoot this afternoon.  The snow was blowing sideways, but I shot for 3 hours anyway.  This week I got my wife's .243 back and a new 44 mag barrel.  The .243 was opening the action at the shot.  They did something to better fit the barrel, did the trigger job, and added the accessory barrel.

I shot the .243 with millet rings and a Tasco 6-18 scope.  The load was 75 g V-Max and 38.0 g H4895 and CCI Benchrest primers.  I shot 12 shots total.  A few to sight in, then some groups.  Sighting in, I had the action open once.  First 3 shot group was 1.5 inches.  Second group put one shot off the paper (I was shooting near the edge.)  Then a case got stuck.  That never happened before, in about 75 shots.

Either the lockup is still poor, or my loads have too much pressure, or both.  I'll try actually working up with a slower powder.  I have imr4350, h4831, and win 760.  I'm still not happy with this rifle.   Before sending it back, it opened with Varget and 100 g round noose, and with H4831 and 85 g Gamekings.  I don't think it had ever opened the action with 75 grain bullets.

I shot 45 rounds from the 44 mag barrel with no problems.  I am going to mount a scope.  The open sights shoot much better than I thought they would.  I like the shape of the rear blade, my eye lines them up very easily.  The problem is the stock on the youth handi.  The comb is much to high for me to shoot open sights comfortably.  I had to jam my cheek into the stock to aim, and my face and teeth took a pounding.  The short length of pull is bad, too, but it is my wife's rifle.

After the work I have been doing of late with my 38-55, I've come to believe that stuck cases are a result of too tight a neck. Before condemning the barrel do the polishing thing to it, pay extra attention to the neck. As to the lock up, take a honing stone, and lightly hone/polish the locking surface of the barrel lug. Be sure the rifel is throughly cleaned, be sure the locking engagements are oil free at the time of use, and don't be afraid to close the action sharply. Don't be abusive in this, but do close it smartly.

I've had my 22 hornet and 7x64 Brenneke come open once each, but I think it was because I didn't close the action firm enough, after paying attention to closing them firmly neither has done it again....so it's like stuck brass, usually my fault!
