348jdj and the 358318
« on: April 24, 2005, 04:24:41 PM »
I am looking for loading data for the 358JDJ round using the 250 grain 358318 gas checked bullet. I'm thinking of using the 358 Winchester data
but >>>>!The data for the 35 Whelen only shows the 200 grain bullet.
Help, my carpal tunnel wont let me shoot JD's loads!

What powders were you thinking of?  I have 358 data from JD Jones....The data I got from him lists all sorts of different bullets, but does not say anything specific about cast bullets....however, at the top of the page he lists some 250 gr loads, that are lower velocity...but does not say what bullets they are.
47.0 grs of     748 @ 1861 fps
48.0 grs of   4064 @ 1959 fps
44.0 grs of   H322 @ 1920 fps
46.0 grs of H4895 @ 1939 fps.

I think you are on the right track with starting loads for 358 Winchester, similar velocities.
Also..45.0 grs of AA2520 should give you just under 2,000 fps and
33.0 grs of AA5744 should be about the same.
But....you could E-mail JD and get it straight from the horses mouth. info@sskindustries.com
He is always pretty good about a personal reply, or (740) 264-0176, 264-7217
....make it count

JD's response was "some people try cast but few succeed".I've had this gun for years and carpal tunnel and arthritis are making it hard to shoot it with fullhouse loads. Lighter loads don't seem to have the accuracy I have enjoyed in the past.I do NOT expect stellar accuracy with cast, but have lots of WW and Lino on hand. I have tried some loads with cast 200 grain bullets(358315) linotype gas checked.I got 2" or less groups off the bags at 75 yards. I also tried some soft nosed cast bullets from the same mold.Accuracy was not as good(~2.5") ,but performance was iffy. The larger the "soft nose" the more erratic the penetration?Velocity was around 1700 fps.Really quite manageable for my beat up hands. I guess I'm looking for some different powders to get a bit more accuracy from the gun.It does have a 4x scope on it (eyes getting old too!)
