I am retired and doubt that I will be buying a lot of stuff from Sinclairs,as I don't have the $ I use to have when I was working. I would like to buy good stuff to work with and fiquire on buying a little at a time .So what companys do you boys deal with?   Where can I get the best products for the buck? I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on the matter, thanks J.Mac

J.Mac,

You're too young to be retired!  But since you are anyway, let me tell you what I use.  I have a 1973 RCBS Rock Chucker that I use almost daily, but I would suggest a Lee Cast Iron Classic for half the money.  According to an ad in this month's American Rifleman, it will even load .50 BMG if that's what floats your boat.

I would suggest a solar scale, more commonly known as a beam balance, like a RCBS 505.  They work whether you have electricity or not and they just seem to work correctly for decades.

I have always used RCBS dies, but lately I have bought Lee dies instead.  They are less expensive and will do as much or more than the higher priced dies.

Since you are talking budget, the previous items are pretty much mandatory, I would use Lee dippers to pour an approximate amount into the scale pan.  Use a trickler or whatever to bring the weight to where it's supposed to be.

Other than supplies, like powder, bullets and primers, that's all you NEED to reload.  I also use a Lee hand primer instead of the priming device on the press.

You can buy cheaper setups, but what I have listed is only $140 or less for one caliber and it will last as long as you are satisfied with a single stage press.  Add all of the bells and whistles you want as you go along, but this will get you started with lasting quality and it won't cost a whole lot.

I usually buy from MidwayUSA.com, but shop around and see where you get the best deal.  I think Graf's still pays the shipping and this stuff isn't real light.

Welcome Aboard :D

There are a-lot of places to buy your reloading equipment from...like Paul said...Grafs and Son's pays for most shipping...excluding Hazmat fee's ...and that can add consideralbly to the cost of primers and powders...

I've used a-lot of the cheaper die sets...in my time...and never regretted selling them off...and buying a better made products...and I know that there are a-lot of folks buying Lee Die sets for the economics of it.. but...you don't have to spend much more to get some real quality made dies...RCBS...Redding...Hornady...all are good dies...and of the three...Reddings would be my choice...and ...if you want to spend more... Forster...is a great investment...but if you are pinching your pennies as a-lot of folks are...going with the Lee's is one way...and another is to check out our classified forums here...and also on e-bay...I just recently purchased a used set of Forster 30-06 Bench Rest dies...for what I would pay for a RCBS set...so there are good buys out there...and they do have auctions on all reloading equipment all the time...Ole Quickdtoo...just picked up 4 like new sets of RCBS,and Hornady's for under $65.00...

Blacky1755,

Welcome to reloading. One item that could help a lot is the Lyman #48 Reloading manual. You'll need a manual anyway, and this is a good one.  They sell for around $20.

Not only does it provide loading data using a variety of manufacturer's components, it also provides a lot of useful information about handloading practices and equipment.

Welcome aboard, J Mac!! :D  I don't have a lot to add other than another source, Cabelas....I'm new to reloading and recently bought a lot of stuff from several places, if you do some price checking, you'll find a lot of places sell their products for about the same, but check the shipping, too....sometimes it can really increase the cost over another source where the price is the same but shipping is way higher. For example, I bought a Lee Classic cast press, Midway's price was the same as Cabelas at $60...regular price at Cabelas, on sale at Midway...but shipping from Midway was over $14, Cabelas shipping was $8.....

Tim,

You are certainly right about Midway's shipping and handling.  However, a 1000 bullets can probably be added to that order for only a couple of dollars more!  It seems like a sheet of paper is going to cost $9 from them, but you can add a tremendous amount of very heavy stuff for very little more.  Sometimes it pays to see what the extra will add to the cost.

BTW, how do you like that Lee Cast Iron?  I would think the primer disposal feature would be worth a lot compared to RCBS spitting/spilling them all over the place!

Paul, I love the Classic cast press, it works excellent.....but I don't have anything to compare it to other than the Lee Loader, so I guess ignorance can be bliss!!! Seriously though, it does work well and the primer disposal tube is cool until you pinch the tube with your knee and pull the cap off and all the spent primers pour all over the floor!!! I shortened the tube and I think that caused the problem, if I had left it longer, the cap wouldn't be in that position. The press works well with the big 3¼" 45-120 brass, so I'm glad I bought it....

As far as the bullets go, I just ordered 500 405gr Rems from Cabelas, shipping goes by cost from them, so heavy items don't cost more, but light expensive things do....It still beat Midway's price by a bunch...even if they had the 405gr rems in stock which they still don't the last time I checked earlier today, cost difference for the bullets alone was $1, but the shipping for the same item is over $22, Cabelas shipping was only $8....

Tim,

I don't have a Lee, but I keep recommending them.  They are about half the price of a Rock Chucker and if you route the primer disposal tube to a trash can or something like that, you never have to worry about spent primers all over the place.  Romex staples or conduit clamps could possibly be used to hold the tube in place, so you wouldn't have to worry about crimping it.

The tube moves up and down with the ram, so it can't be fixed in place with anything unless it were a bit bigger like a piece of PVC pipe mounted below the press for the tube to move up and down in. The reason I bought it was because so many people recommended it and the price was right....

I shopped all over, on the net, and some on this website.  I ended up buying a RCBS Turret Kit and then also had to buy a few other items as time went on.  I would ask on Graybeards classifieds 1st though and then compare prices with new.

Welcome to GB Outdoors.

It would be helpful to know what you plan to reload, and how many rounds per year you plan to load.  I'm a low volume loader (<1000 rounds per year) myself and a single stage RCBS press does fine for me.  I have a Hornady scale and my dies are usually RCBS or Lyman.  I load for pistol and rifle.

If you're on a budget it doesn't hurt to put a want to buy (WTB) ad in the classifieds here for equipment you need.

Well I always seem to come at these things from a different angle.  Since you have been loading for some time with a mentor, and unless he is cutting you free I would hold my fire and lurk on ebay.  you can pick up complete lots for cheap if you watch.  I started with a lee turret press I bought at a gun show in one pistol cal.  Then bought a lot on ebay with a RCBS jr press and a bunch of dies, scale etc,  bought another lot with a Rock Crusher press and assorted needs, trimmers etc and sold the Jr press on ebay for over half of what the crusher cost.  If you know what you are doing and you are starting from scratch you will be surprised what you can get with those retirement $$$.  Best of luck, JB

blacky1755,

A lot of people here don’t have any idea of how Taxes and Handling/Shipping charges will drive up the cost of mail order (Web Orders) higher than the cost of buying locally.

I’m not afraid of ordering stuff on line (do it all the time). You just have to break out the calculator to see if you’re saving any money.

well i dont know about that.  i can order out of midway, and pay the s+h, and still come out much further ahead than if i buy locally.  and i can get exactly what i want, too; instead of settling for something else.
one of my biggest pet peeves is when i ask for, say,  150 grain nosler bt's.  and the clerks says, we aint got those, but here are some 130 grain speer's.      if that is what i wanted, i would have asked for 130 grain speers.    it is to the point that if a clerk approaches me,  i usually check them right out of the gate.  my standard warning is "if you dont know your banana'a,  leave now or i will eat you alive."  most times they gladly skate.  then we are both happy.  funny,  i never had to use that on the midway folks.   99% of the time they have it,  the other 1% of the time they back order it for me.   if it does end up costing a bit more,  the lack of aggravation is worth it to me.

Amen to that.  I'd rather pay more and get what I want rather than pay less and end up with something I didn't really want in the first place.

myronman3,

That was my point. If I can’t find what I want locally, I go on the web. If I can’t find what I want locally at a far price, I go to the web. I try to support the locals, but if they try to rape my on the price, I go to the web.

i agree with that 100%.  i try to support local business but when they are charging $12 and change for a box of regular old 357 bullets that i can get through midway for $4 and change,  it becomes really easy to see why i like midway.  my rule of thumb is if the locals are within a few bucks of midway's prices, i buy local.  if not,  1-800-243-3220....

I suppose it would be necessary to factor in the cost of fuel to get those local products.  The closest to me is 20 miles away, but is usually pretty high.  After that, it's 40+ miles one way and at $2+/gal plus 8.25% sales tax it's pretty easy to just use Midway and have it delivered to my door.   :-)

Thanks guys for the warm welcome.Yeah Paul ,you are right about me working but the 12 hr days and driving 90+ miles was killing me! Other than one pay day a month ,I don't have lots of regrets!  The Rockchucker and RCBS equip is what my buddy Slim has and it makes better ammo than I can shoot! Slim lives 4 hrs away so that makes me a Low Volume reloader  Greg! Guess thats one way to save $ hahahahaha! I reload for a 30/06, 257 roberts imp. and my son's 243 and working on a load for a  300wsm.
I would buy local ,thats a 40+ mile trip and he's not giving away the store either! So no big savings that way ! I have bought at Cabelas and Midway and was not watching my $ on S&H ,so I better wake up,thanks.  Well I see I'm not going to save money on this board either as  I have been reading you guys post for quite a while and now I want a Handi-Rilfe in 204 or 223  !  Thanks for helping my addiction,I know my wife will be Pleased ,J.Mac

blacky,
You might get in touch with Midway and get them to send you a catalogue and monthly sale flier.  Sometimes they run the RCBS Rockchucker kit on sale.  It has just about everything you need to reload less the bullets, powder and dies at a pretty good savings.
Best,
