Hey folks... I have had very good success with a CVA Hawken kit I put together some years ago. I want to do one for my 12 year old grandson.
Could you suggeat some web sites for kits... Ideas? Thanks, Scotty

I've had really good luck so far with two web dealers.  A google search for either will get you the websites if these are incorrect.

Midsouth Shooters Supply (www.midsouthshooterssupply.com) really good prices on Lyman Great Plains Rifle kits,
and Track of the Wolf (www.trackofthewolf.com) for supplies to finish the gun (barrel brown, stock finishes, balls, patches, lubes, etc.).

Shipping from both sites is reasonable, and the customer service from both is top notch.  Whatever one doesn't have, the other will.

Good luck with your project.  I'm in the beginning stages of a new .54 cal percussion Lyman GPR myself.

You might try Dixie Gunworks, also.  www.dixiegun.com

The last kit I built was from Deer Creek Products.  Now web site and no email, but great people.  Their kits vary a lot.  The Deer Creek Rifle is avail in .45, .50 and .54 and is not really a period correct gun but would be sorta representative of a plains rifle of the 1845 to 1890 period.  Last I looked they ran about $200 for a percussion kit.

The one I built is a very accurate rifle.

You can call them and get a catalog at 765-525-6181

Longcruise,

You talking about their underhammer or their Mowrey rifle?

Neither.  They have a kit called a Deer Creek Rifle and a Northwest Rifle.  They look identical except for the furniture.  One has a plain steel patch box and the other has a nickel silver patch box.

Does not match any particular "school" or time period but probabluy comes close to a very late style plains rifle up to the turn of the century.

Here's a link to some pics and a shooting report (actually my grand son's rifle now).  http://www.mikeswillowlake.com/deer_creek_rifle.htm
