Loks to me like one of them "stretched" 330s would be a better choice for turtle trapping.

Once and awhile I get one under the ice in #330s, too. Weird to pull one up in winter, but I get them with enough consistency that I am starting to rethink just how much they spend truly "hibernating" through the winter.
Anyone else nab one in winter with your #330s?

Same here Jim. I've lost count of snappers I've caught in 330's set at bank lodge entrances, under ice in late winter. I don't believe they hibernate at all. Some of them really stink in the winter. I have no clue why but the smell is awful. Anyone know why that is?

Forgot to answer Newts question on the superb speciman of Chelydra.  The snapping turtle seen in picture is a female.  To the uninitiated  snapping turtle  fans to make sure:  you turn turtle over and look at  the distance the vent is from the carapace.  The male tail is longer and thicker than female and vent is further from edge of plastron than of the female snapper.

I figured that Newt knew because he butchered it and knew whether or not it had a johnson.

That is how I know what gender snappers are.

Many other turtles are easy, but snappers....

Did you know that a turtles  wind pipe is located in the middle of his tongue?   Thought i would throw some hard evidence in  here as subject is starting to float a bit with Slimey Newt and Wacky dackers (whoops) Quackers  feeling their spring time oats..................

RdFx, you pull'n my leg ?
That turtle in the picture is a Male. That is from what I can see in the picture.
1- Your right about the tail.A female has a smaller an shorter tail.
2- also you are right about the vent
     ----more----
3-The points of the shell on eather side of the tail. Most f the time a male points up, A female points down.
4-The face a female turtle has a shorter face than a male. Just like you can see in Red Fox where the vixins snout is shorter than the dog fox

Lee,not a lot of snapper movement in the north country when I am there.
It might have something to do with the ice still floating around.Even the day it hit 85,there was still some ice on one shore ofone of my lakes.
I think I have a grand total of 1 caught and released in the spring. You must remember almost all of my sets are castor mounds--I have to play the otter avoidance thing as much as possible,so I dont set any narrows or pinch points.
Ever seen two snappers playing natures game in the shallows?Looks and sounds like a couple water buffalo doing water gymnastics.

I have.
There easy to catch when they are do'n the water dance. Just run the boat right up to them.kill the engine, and jump in. Hopfully you'll land next to them.Grab'm up quick and hope the boat did'nt go too far. It's hard walking back with a snapper in each hand. Forget try'n to swim. If the waters that deep you have to let at least 1 go.Some times both of them.BUT what a Adrenalin rush even if you have to turn them loose.

I didn't even bother trying Newt.Season wasn't open, our state is making so many new restrictions on harvesting.Bottom line--they really don't want you to take them, let alone sell them.

Thats realy a sin. They are try'n to make it imposable to make a "Honist" live'n out in the woods/water. Just why would they think the snappers are on the brink of extincton.

Snapper information
« Reply #24 on: May 08, 2005, 02:53:05 PM »
Newt i would think that Minn doesnt have any data on snappers in thier nbrs fm past yrs or harvest data so they are trying to cover thier butts.  I doubt if they will put any money toward research but still handcuff the few trappers or people that do harvest turtles..
