Hi all,

I'm new to the site as a member, but I've been visiting and soaking up the knowledge here for a few months (a.k.a. lurking) so I thought this might be the best forum for my question.

I'm trying to takedown my father's Remington Model 760 to give it a good interior cleaning. Problem is I can't get the action tube cap off the action tube. Interestingly, there's two small indents on the action tube just below the cap.....like the factory stamped/pressed it into the cap threads? Or maybe I'm seeing the ends of a pin??

The guides simply state to unscrew it, but that ain't happening......I thought I should ask the folks in the know before I tried something that might ruin my pop's rifle. Thanks for any help you can give! T

The end cap isn't meant to be removed, instead the entire action tube is unscrewed from the action. Moving the pump to the rear a bit will expose a pair of holes. These allow a rod to be inserted thru the action tube. the plug can be removed but unless needed it is a waste. I've seen both screw in and staked in plugs used. I usually don't remove the plug just unscrew the action rod. This will allow the barrel assembly(barrel + extension) to be removed and cleaned seperately. The link below will take you to a good diagram. Remember just because it can be removed, doesn't mean it should be. Don't forget to clean the magazine! If you've any further questions just ask..

Thanks gunnut! If I don't have to remove it that's great! Thanks for the link, too.

Regarding the use of a rod to unscrew the action tube, should the rod be brass or other soft metal, or can I use a "regular" piece of steel rod? (Don't want to ruin pop's gun).

I'll be sure to clean the magazines too. Do you recommend a complete takedown of the magazines?

I usually use a steel rod as they won't bend as easily and we won't need that much pressure to unscrew the action tube. A piece of drill rod or even a large nail would work well. It's best if the rod come fairly close to filling the hole. I would take the magazine down. The 760 mags are fairly simple as they don't contain the bolt release endemic to the 740-742-7400 magazines. Welcome to the sight!! Always glad to have more folks!

The 760 is a good solid rifle. They last well and shoot good enough for their purpose,, some better than they should! I bought one a while back as a project but can't make up my mind what to make it up as, 358 or 35 whelan,, perhaps a 6mm/06.. Good luck and glad to have you aboard!
