Hi all. I have a chance to pick up a Savage 219 in 30-30. I'm thinking about doing this and rechambering it to 30-40 Krag or even the Ackley version. Can anyone see any problems with this as far as action strength/limitations. Thanks...RW

I know of one thats been rechambered to 30-30 Improved. I never heard of any problems with. I have one in 30-30 and it is very accurate and a joy to hunt deer with. I've not have any problems with my handloads, so it will stay stock. The other one I have is a 22 Hornet that was rechambered to K Hornet. I sure like that one too. Wish I could find more of them.

Thanks Popplecop for the response. The Savage looks like it would make a neat stalking rifle for hunting in the Adirondacks Mtns here in NY. I've been wanting to get a 30-40 and thought this may be an inexpensive way to get one....RW

I put a peep sight on mine and yes that's exactly what I use it as, my stalking rifle.

The conversion to 30-40 probably could be done. I think, however, that in such a light rifle the recoil would be severe. I have had several in 30-30 and if you reload with a 130 to 150 gr spitser bullets you might be suprised at the accuracy that can be attained with these loads with more than suffient power for hunting. I particularly liked the 130 gr loads-light recoil, sufficient power, and excellant accuracy (under and inch at 100 yds) with the unaltered 30-30 case. I scoped several of mine. Also had one sleved to 25-35. Great rifles.
