44 Special Single Actions

I am thinking about buying a 44 Special Single action revolver.  How about some recommendations and or places to look for one?

Freedom Arms at the top end. You can also get a Rugers or Taurus  44 mag and shoot the 44 specials in that gun. S&W also makes some nice 44 special police models with 3-inch barrels.

Hartford Armory makes two old Remington models that come in the 44 special/magnum calber.  These are beautiful and expensive.

single actions in .44 spec are tough to pick up. You have usfa colts FA and customs like clements and bowen make on the top end and cimmeron and other italian copys on the bottom Ruger doesnt make one but there is some rummors floating around that they will next year but i wouldnt hold my breath. In my opinion the best gun for the money is the USFA its going to run you around a grand but its classic looking and very well made! Not as strong as a FA but in my opinion it has a little more class.

USFA now lists their Rodeo in .44 Special at a MSRP of $741, with real world prices somewhat lower.  I would get on every waiting list I could find, then buy a cot and camp on their doorstep until I had one.  Except the the FA 97 (at roughly 3x the price) everything else is second rate.  Also list a 44-40 convertable cylinder for $241 extra...

wow i didnt know that myself. Like Blackhawk said thats definetly the best buy on one out there. I may have to pitch a tent for one myself!!

You also might consider buying an Old Model Blackhawk in .357 and having it converted to 44 Special.  Try to find a copy of John Taffin's "Sixguns" and look at a few examples.  There are several gunsmiths out there that will do the work.  Mine was done by Andy Horvath and it is quite a thing to see.  Sorry, but I don't have a digital camera to post pics with.  It has an excellent blue job, a Super Blackhawk hammer and trigger, and a brass Super gripframe.  THe barrel is 4 5/8".

I have had my .44 Special Old Model Blackhawk for well over 25 years and Yes it is my #1 carry gun.  Having one built at this time by a qualified smith will put you in financial range of a FA97.  While I can't access USFA's website right now, I did see that they had listed more calibers for their Flattop Target with, I believe, .44 Special.  Even that would still be a bit less than a FA in a piece that should appreciate over time.

I know some of you guys will turn up your noses, but I have a Uberti Flattop Target 5 1/2".  I bought it new about a year ago in 44-40 and converted it to 44 Spl using a cylinder from VTI with the help of my local gunsmith.  I love the nearly-authentic look, feel, and sound of this thing, so for $550 total cost, I'm pretty happy with it.

It definately likes the 250 gr cast slugs with stout charges of Unique (7+ gr) or 2400 (17+ gr).  Lighter charges and/or lighter bullets just don't group at all.  I've never shot a FA or other Cadillac SA's, and I don't know how this one will stand up over the years, but when I touch off round after round of pure thunder at the range, guys come over to see what I'm shooting and the target does me proud.  What can I say?  Sometimes the blind cow finds the strawberries.
