Rem 1100 Woes
« on: April 26, 2005, 07:06:47 AM »
Just got a used Rem 1100 at Gander Mountain and now have had persistent trouble getting it to work right.  Basically it fails to cycle, sometimes leaving the old round neatly in the chamber.  Sometimes it locks open, leaving me to pull out the old shell and push the button to send it forward with the next one.

It did this consistently with light Federal loads and with Fiocchi high brass buckshot.

O-Ring looked ok, anything I should look for?  Is this a special setting that I need to adjust it out of?

Thanks!

First thing, clean the heck out of it, including the spring in the buttstock, and the gas ports. Then lightly lube it. These guns suffer more from neglect than anything else.

That gun should function flawlessly. So you got problems. You do clean it, right? If it's gunky, the action won't work...consistently anyway. You'll still have the problems you listed. If you do clean it, let a smith look at it. You might have a bad spring, or a bad gas system that is causing this.

Good luck!  :D

Sounds like good advice.  Any good take-down manuals online?  Seemed clean enough but I should know better than that.

Thanks!

If you don't have an owner's manual, you can download one from the Remington website. They are listed under support.

Welp, I cleaned it all up and it still short cycled with light loads.  Ran high brass buckshot in it and it cycled perfectly.  So I'm guessing it requires heavy loads to work properly.  Anyone know of how to change this?  Might not want to though if I end up wanting to use heavy loads for hunting.

And on an unrelated note, I'm not sure when it was made, but how do I tell if its barrel is good to fire steel shot in?  It's a 30" full choke.

If I recall correctly there is a magnum orifice and a light action orfice for the 1100s. You will have to check with your Smith or call Remington's Parts Department.

Oriface?  You mean the gas port?

On a different note, if I wanted to switch to lighter loads, would it be safe and effective to drill open the gas port, only ever so slightly and preferably to a level that's been done before?

Not sure I want to do that yet.  Though I used to swear by the Federal target load value packs, I'm starting to warm up to the heavier stuff.

BRG3,

Dont lube the magazine tube that the action rod collars slide on, all that does is collect dust and carbon up quicker.  Instead, when it starts to carbon up from shooting, take 0000 steel wool and polish the magazine tube, then leave it dry.  Clean the inside of the action bar collar the same way.  Polished carbon is slicker than any lube you can put on it and it wont gunk up quite as fast.  Try turning the ring that the o-ring is on over then shoot the low brass loads.  Hope that works for ya.

Is this barrel chambered for the 3" shells or does it have MAGNUM on the barrel? If so,then the high brass type shells will be what ya need to stick to. You can buy a new barrel for it. Check with local shops for a used one. Basspro,Cabelos and even WallyWorld carry new barrels for around $250. They come with screw in chokes(most of them do anyway).

As for drilling the port out....I'd just buy another barrel.

Also check to make sure that the 2 piece ring that goes behind the oring. If the slots in both should not be lined up. If they are then pressure is running past thus your action doesn't cycle.       HWD

As far as I know they don't manufacture an 1100 magnum  :? .

You said your high brass shells function fine. Your gun might need what they call a hitch. Don't know where you find it but supposedly the 11-87 was designed around the necessity of a hitch. It allows you to shoot the light field loads out of a 3" or magnum barrel, but if you got a 3" barrel there shouldn't be TOO much of a problem  :?

Hope ya get this all solved!  :D

rem 1100 not cycling

I have a Remington 1100  12 ga. and just purchased a Winchester Supreme 12 ga. O/U to shoot sporting clays with.  I shoot 2 3/4 powder and 7/8 oz shot.  When I take the grand kids out to shoot, I let them use the 1100 and my light reloads.  The 1100 will not cycle consistently with the light loads.  Remington told me that it takes 3 1/4 powder and 1 1/8 of shot as a minumum to make the 1100 cycle properly.  Mine is probably 30 +/- years old.  Hope this helps. :D

PUT A NEW O RING IN!!!!!!!!
It cures the problem at least 90% of the time.  I don't care how good the present one looks, replace it with a new one and it will more than likely work.
What ever you do dont start enlarging ports or changing anything other than the O ring.  With time and lots of shooting a little wear occurs and the O ring needs to be replaced.
I think this will do it.  If it doesnt than shame on me.
williek
PS.  I've worked on alot of these and that's usually the problem.  I have a goose hunting buddy that has to replace his every fall or he will have some problems.  The old ring looks perfect.  You can measure them with a micrometer and they are exactly the same, but the gun will work perfectly with the new one and sometimes fail with the old one.  Go figure!!!!!!

I did get better performance after a good thorough cleaning.  It even fed an entire 10rd mag without a hitch.  Yes, 10rd.  I sure did notice the change in cyclic rate thanks to Remington's very wierd system that uses the cartridge feeding as part of the cycle.  Might have to "spring" for a Wolf spring.

The receiver is what says magnum, not the barrel.

I think I'll pick up an O-ring next time I'm at Gander Mountain.  I certainly will be there again... I have two used Remington's on layaway.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, how Remington seems to drop so many popular guns and the used ones just fly off the shelves.  I'll end up having three used Remingtons by the end of the year... at least.

JP,
Rem discontinued the "Magnum" actions when they came out with the 11-87. There were numerous complaints at that time about 2 3/4 shells not working in them. The barrel had only one port versus two in the standard barrels.

Battlerifle,

Get those others outa hock and shoot the crap out of them. Mine has close to 20k rounds thru it and still goes off when I pull the trigger. I have had to replace the oring a couple of time though. Buy extras. They don't take up much room and WHEN YA NEED ONE YA GENERALLY NEED IT NOW!!

Picked up my 870 ESM a week ago.  Shot it today.  Feels great, but it has a way of launching my thumb into my cheekbone.  I made fun of everyone tacticalizing their shotguns when I got out of my ubertactical stage, but now I'm thinking of getting a P-grip buttstock to keep my thumb out of my face.  I wonder if someone stuck a youth stock on that monster.

It has a mechanical problem too.  Once in a while it will get itself stuck after a shot, unable to rach the slide back.  After playing with it a bit, it comes.  The lever to depress is already withdrawn when this happens.

Get you a bore brush and some good cleaner. Give the chamber a good going over(lots of elbow grease). Sometimes the residue at the end of the chamber has never been cleaned out and causes this problem.
