375 JDJ vs. 45-70
« on: April 26, 2005, 08:58:40 AM »
Does the 375 JDJ really have much of an advantage on game over the 45-70 in a 15" Encore? Any experiences with these two on game I'd like to hear if one works better then the other? Thank you for any information.

I think if reloaded the 45-70 out performs the 375 JDJ. JMHO  :D

having shot both and still own the 45-70,I believe the 45-70 with 300 grain slugs will anchor game better than a 300 gr.375.The 45 bullet will expand at 17/1800 fps and slower! A .375 300 gr slug wont.
Any thing I'd hunt with the 375JDJ can be hunted with the 45-70,BUT, I would not hunt deer and smaller game with the .375

Personally, I prefer the .45-70 over the JDJ.  The main reason is the simple fact loaded ammo is a lot cheaper and easier to find for the .45-70, and relatively inexpensive.  Plus, I think the .45-70 is a better all around performer, especially when reloaded.

45-70 for me! Would never use a jdj cartridge as better factory ammo out there and cheaper too, plus easier and cheaper to reload.

45-70 Recoil

How is the 45-70 recoil (15 inch bbl).
Significantly more than a Ruger 44 Blackhack (7.5 inch bbl) ?

I've got one of each.  They both shoot great @ 100 yds, but alot depends on what you want to shoot, and how far you want to shoot it.  The 375 shoots superior bullets as fas as BC is concerned, but if you're only shooting a 150 lb whitetail at 100 yds why would you need it?

375 JDJ vs. 45-70

I agree with all the others...the 45/70 would be my choice.

Like mkee said...if you are only shooting 150 yards or so, that high BC on the 375 bullets does not mean much... At those ranges, the 45/70 is hard to beat, and i think some of it is because the .375 bullets just dont open up as well as the 300 - 350 grain 45/70 slugs. That is the reason i sorta lost interest in the 375JDJ in the first place and went to a 358JDJ.

As for recoil, you wont want to run 100 rounds through it in a day, but it aint for plinkin, unless you just like being punished. i think my Scandium/Titanium Smith .357 with heavy loads hurts my hand more than either the JDJ or the 45/70. There are lots of good low-recoil 45/70 loads out there for practice too..
