shooting Plainsman and Buffalo Single Shot

Howdy, folks.  Do any of you guys have any experience with sidematches like Plainsman and Buffalo Single Shot?  I'm especially interested in the Plainsman.  What sort of targets are used for the rifle stage, and what's the usual range?  Blasting a steel target at 10 yards with a buffalo rifle sounds like a recipe for disaster, so what alternatives are used to keep Plainsman lively and safe?

Now, the Buffalo Single Shot match I figure isn't really an action match, and paper targets are fine, but what are the usual ranges?  What size targets are the norm, and do folks favor bullseye style or photo realistic animal targets?  Shooting sticks, or flopped over a hay bale?

I shoot a lot of plainsman, at least every big event I go to. Rifle targets are generally placed to the rear of a bay. I would say from 25-40 yards and are usually pretty big. You don;t see many miss a rifle target. I shoot a handi rifle 45-70 and a 300 gr bullet for plainsman. For long range with the single shot I use a 405 gr bullet and stouter powder (777) I also shoot lobg range lever with a 38-55 Marlin 336 cowboy and again I use 777. I should mention I use Goex for plainsman. Try it it is fun and most clubs only shoot 2 stages of it.  :-)
You can outfit a handi for long range with a tang sight, but for long range you need to disable the ejector. Extractor only. FYI that is done by grinding the ejector shaft. Now the Buff Classic does not come with ejector anyways and still makes a good plainsman or long range rifle.
