My handi seems to like this ammo it's a 405 gr hard cast lead bullet having approx 1200 ft-lbs at 100. I know this is plenty for deer (using the 1000 ft-lb rule); is it enough for bear ?

Mine shot it about as well as I can shoot a sling shot at 100 yrd.
As far as bear I would say yes it worked 100 years ago but I never have hunted them someone may know. I would use a souped up load & make sure of the shot

The remington factory 405 has taken many black bear and they advertise there velocity at just over 1300fps so i dont see why it wont work. But i myself would use the 400-405 gr . bullets at just over 1800. No question on that load and you can reach that velocity and stay withein saami specs.

I see no reason for the heavy loads unless I was going to Africa or hunting Brown/Grizzly bears. The PMC cowboy load will work fine on anything to 125 yards or so.

I dont consider the 1800 fps load a heavy load when you can push that bullet to 2000 fps . And hear in the north east with the way the black bears are growing i would be more comfortible with the 1800fps load. I have one that nears 600 pounds on my property in NY and PA had over 50 bears taken this year over 500 pounds with the largest bear weighting in at 834 or 864 . Hell thats the size of a Grizzly.

Thanks guys, I plan to reload for this gun but since this load grouped so well I was wondering if it would do until I get a suitable replacement. From the looks of things it will do ok for my purposes and I will get some 405 gr hard cast and work up my own load. Thanks again.
