Barrel length
I am looking at a 12-inch contender barrel so I can have it rechambered to a 309 JDJ or 308 bellum. Do you all think this barrel length work or should I hold out for a 14-inche barrel or longer

personally, i would hold out for the 14-15" barrel. i think the bigger guns need it. 10-12" is best for the straight wall cases and the smaller bottleneck cases. this is just my opinion for my uses. everyone has their own ideas. only way i'd do it with the shorter barrel is if i had decided it would make it more portable or i had to do that to be able to shoot it offhand. still i'd rather find rest or a technique to make the long barrel work. then again if you already have a long barrel big gun and just want to add another option, i say go for it. :D

Is the barrel you are considering really a 12 inch barrel or is it a 12 hunter barrel?   which is really a 10 inch with a muzzle tamer screwed on the end?  I have a 14 inch 308 (censored brand B***M) with a break and it's loud but mild to shoot.  I used to have a 10 inch 30-30 and it was so loud and the flash was terrible,  the 14 inch (censored Brand B***M) is much more pleasant to shoot even though generating a much higher muzzle velocity.
I think a 12 inch would work ok, but if its a 10 inch with 2 inches of muzzle break, standby for the noise and flash.

the person trading it said it was a 14 inch cut down to 12 inch with a 11 degree crown.

the only reason i am thinking about the bellum rechamber is because you use normal 308 dies and dont have to pay an extra $69 for dies

I would go with the SSK rechamber and a 14" tube

Yes the dies cost more, But $69.00 you might have to wait another month to get the dies. I think you will be happier with the JDJ rounds. The work is completed faster and his warranty is the best.
And yes I would wait for the 14" barrel to surface. I feel you need more barrel for all that powder to be useful.

A buddy sent a 14" hunter barrel off to SSK to be rechambered to 309JDJ.  He needed cash so I bought it before it got back.  I hated the brake, so I sent it back to be shortened to somewhere around 12".  I ended up ordering a 14" SSK barrel and getting rid of the shorter tube.  I'd look for a 14".

bbl. length

rickyp, Iwouldn't worry a bit about a 12" bbl.. I had a 14" hunter rechambered to .309jdj.  Too loud! Cut the brake back so as to leave enough of it(1/16") to act sorta like a crown. Works fine and the short knob on the end of the bbl. holds a bbl. band on just fine. Bbl. ends up about 12-3/4" inside. Some folks hate the knob. You loose a little velosity compared to a 14", but not that much.  Pat

A 12" barrel will work you can get the same performance with less powder than the 309 jdj in a 12" tube.
If you wish to really use the power of the 309 then a 14-16" tube is nessesary.
My thinking is a 30-30 improved will do every thing a a 309 will in a 12" tube.
