I was reading something on the Bear Hunting forum that got me to thinking. Someone seen what they took to be a blond black bear. Only it was walking upright. Could that have been someone in one of those new Chillie suites Cabela's sells?
So to test my theory I put my homemade chillie suite on and went out behind the house. I called the wife and kid on my cell phone and asked them to look out back and see if they could see anything. They went to the second story bed room window. I was moving around amongst the spruce, birches, and willows. Right off the bat, both said they saw a grizzly. At first they both thought it was a bush, then as I moved they realised it was moving, so it had to be a grizzly. Wrong color for a Black bear. Wife is now threating to burn my chillie suite. I have orders (that's unusual wife has never forbid me to do anything before) not to wear it till after bear season. Wife claims it made me look just like a bear when I moved. My wife is not your average hockey mom. She is an experienced outdoors woman, with many Moose, Caribou, Deer, Black Bear, and one Grizzly under her belt. So if she says it made me look like a Bear I believe her.

That's spelled ghillie, camo used for a long time by snipers.  Not sure on the exact origin of the simple camo system.  My understanding is that it takes a while to get good at using them.  But then again the guys that really need them, are very good at adapting to any situation.

I believe to be almost invisible the blend of colors has to be simular to the terrain you are concealing yourself in.

the origin was suits used by Scottish gamekeepers to catch poachers...They really do work well for their intended purpose....<><.... :grin:

The color of mine is predomately brown, with black and tan to blend with the fall, winter, and spring, folage here in Alaska.  

I was also thinking about the fact that a lot of the bears down south are brown.  They may not be grizzlies but they are brown anyway.  You can get the chillie suites in brown, so think about it.

MSP is correct. I was wearing one doing surveilance one time and had a kid step on me. We made them in sniper school and really if your using it as intended you are crawling very slowly on your belly if moving at all. I would not wear one while walking through the woods anywear. If there are no native bears were you hunt any one that was startled by the form of a hunter in a guillee suit might shoot regardless.

This was the purpose of the fringe on the old buckskin shirts and coats. The moving rippling edge helped braek up the wearers outline.

Buckskin fringe had several purposes besides ornamentation, from using the "whangs" as they were called as string to tie things up with and mend moccasins and clothing, to draining the water off in the rain, to being chewed or eaten when food was scarce. A person could tell the age of a set of buckskins by the condition of the fringe and how much of it was left. And to keep this on topic, it was in general, quite Handi!!! :-D

because the orgin of Guillie Suits was posted i'll put the origin of the term "sniper" to my best knowledge. came from the wiley bird Snipe and those who managed to take one was dubbed sniper.
