Sweet birds. I love the thump, but also like the big splash.

I shot some Greaters over water last year and almost started a tidal wave. :-D

Seeing that picture has made me look forward to November. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for looking. I do like to hunt those geese. I mostly field hunt them though. I WISH we could get your namesakes to stop here during the regular dark goose season, but most of them blow right on through about like the snows. BTW, if you aren't already, while you are looking forward to November you should be out talking to those turkeys. Turkey hunting is actually what got me interested in calling...

I mostly field hunt geese as well but from time to time go for the water goose hunts in early February.

Two years ago we slayed the specks, but last year got skunked. I never really saw any either.

Turkey hunting has got me primed for the fall. I didn't get one, but should have. I am embarrased to say it but I missed one. How is it possible to miss a walking bird in front of you? I don't know but I did it.

Hope you get a bunch of honkers this fall.

I need to get going on my calling practice. Have a vacation planned for early September early season goose hunt here in Wisconsin. Five a day, posession limit is twice daily bag. Time to make the jerky :grin:

Field hunting in a t-shirt with 12 or more honkers in the bag for our party just rocks!

Let's see, pattern shotguns. Stock up on ammo. Sharpen knives. Reserve space at meat locker. Got alot to do before September. Oh yeah, practice calling. :eek:

I love hunting the greater Canada's in Alberta each September. We often hunt out of pits over decoys in the stubble fields. Great action! :grin:

A few years ago my hunting partners buddy got hit by a falling greater. Shook him up so bad he couldn't shoot straight for the rest of the day. He spent more time watching where they were landing than where he was shooting... :grin: It sounds funny, but some of those big baby's weigh up to 18lbs, so getting hit by one could really hurt. :eek:

Reminds me of my friend George, who had to go back to the truck to get something, coffee, shells, can't remember.

As he's rummaging around in the back, Smitty in the next blind from me stands and fires at a small flock of geese hitting our decoys, hits one real hard, flutters its wings and then goes into a dive...bounces off the bed of the truck and hits George smack dab in the family jewels and knocks him clean out of the truck (bird weighed about 14 lbs). As it was the only bird shot, we were all watching were it went so we all saw what happened.

While laying on the ground screaming--in pain. and cursing any and all, while the rest of us are howling in laughter, another large flock starts for our decoys...as we're ducking down to get ready, George is scrambling under the truck for protection.

We all limited out that day, except George who was in too much pain...took him to the hospital and X-Ray showed he had broken his pelvis and hip and was hospitalized for the rest of the hunting season.

We all donated some birds, from everytime we went hunting, to George's family. Least we could do for such a great story to tell.
