The grips on my glock 23 aren't quite long enough and i'd like to add a fingergrip extention but i can't figure out how to get the base off.

Turn your magazine over, there is a small circle on the bottom. You need to push that in and hold it in. I use a allen wrench and at times have used a top form a ball point pen.  This will take the tension off the plate from the spring. You then need to squeeze the sides of the magazine to take the pressure off the plate sides and then you can slide the base plate off. I take a rag and wrap around the sides and use a pair of channel locks to squeeze with (but be careful you don't want to crack the mag).

When you buy the extension the instructions should be in there.

Take a small punch and insert it into the hole in the floor plate. Press down while sliding the floor plate off the front on the magazine. Be sure to remove the floor plate slowly and note the orentation of the internals for reassembly. Piece of cake!

Yeah, I know but the darn base plates on my 27 were tight as heck - so I had to improvise!

Those cheesy little 2" c-clamps that you find in the $1 tool bin make that job real easy.  Use one to compress the sides- just a little- and you have both hands free to slid the base off.
I have one weapon and lots of toys.
If life turns really ugly, the one closest to hand is a weapon.
All the rest are toys.

The clamp works but it is unnecessary

"Find a hard surface with a good, aquare edge, like a table or bench top. Hold the mag in your hand, floorplate out and the rounded end up. Place only the edge of the floorplate on the edge of the table. Push in on the pin with a small punch or armorer's tool far enough to clear the hole in the floorplate. While pushing down and forward with your tool still inserted in the hole, force the floorplate to slide over the locking pips and off the bottom of the mag. Once you succeed the first time you won't have any further problems."

Don't do it on a nice table though... a cutting board, floor, or workbench.

This is the easiest way.  And you wont crack a mag
