Bushnell Legend 5-15x40 or Mueller 4-16x50
« on: April 29, 2005, 07:24:18 AM »
I just bought a CZ 527 American varmit 223 and now I need a scope. I do not have any personal experience with these two scopes but I wanted to put a higher power on this rifle and this is the price range I want to stay in. I would like to hear from those that have one or both of these scopes.-----Thanks-----vernonp

I have a Legend 5-15X40 scope I just put on a .243 for varmints. I love it, it is extremely clear compared to a Banner 6-24X40 and a Banner 6-18X50 I have on 2 other varmint rifles. It is quicker to get your sight picture, and brighter at high magnifaction that my other 2. I like the mil-dot recticle also. Even though it's only 15X, the clarity of the optics makes it more usable than my 18X or 24X at the longer ranges. I plan to upgrade my 2 Banners either to Bushnell Elites, or 2  more Legends this fall as funds are available. I have not had an opportunity to look at a Mueller scope, so have no idea how they compare.  I do know I can't tell a lot of difference looking through my Legend 5-15X and  my brother's 5-15X Elite 3200, and I like the mil-dot recticle of the Legend better! I hope you have a retailer  where you can compare the Mueller to other scopes, It would be nice to hear of a  hands-on comaprison of them to Bushnell or others.

Hope this helps-

I have several Muellers including the 4-16x50IGR Sport Dot, also have a Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x40, which is a couple steps up from the Legend....I would have to say that the Mueller would be as good if not better than the Legend as it's almost as good as the Elite 4200, it's brighter but it also has a 50mm objective which can be a detraction for a lot of shooters who like the smaller 40mm objective for lower mounting. I would seriously consider the 4-16x50 Mueller Tactical w/mildot reticle if I were not swayed away from the larger objective. Mueller is also working on a 8.5-25x44AO non illuminated mildot in the near future which promises to be a great scope that is priced right from what I've seen of it.

I personally think that the Mueller is better than the Legend.

I just checked out the Mueller 4-16x50 sport dot and the tactical 4-16x50 on Jon's site and they seem to be the same scope. Just what is the difference?----------vernonp

The reticle...one's an illuminated dot, the other is an illuminated mildot...

The Legends have something like 92% light transmission, which is better than the Elite 3200 (at 88% but with rainguard) and the Elite 4200 (95% also with rainguard).

However, I think that the Legend has a 2 piece body - which I don't like.  I honestly don't know about the Mueller.

Still, on a light kicking rifle like a .223, recoil (and thus the strength of a scope tube) should not be an important factor).
