Hey guys, just over from the NEF CF boards.
I don't have a huntsman yet and I am not in the market for a 25 acp plug (bolt ML), but thought I'd ask any of you who had one some questions. I have heard of them and their accuracy gains and flyer reductions. I guess I have never seen one and never really thought about their workings.
I understand that they use a 25 acp case and primer in lieu of a standard primer. Is there still a flash hole at the end of the breech plug? If not, wouldn't this require a case to be inserted (primed) in order to load powder without it funneling back out of the plug? This would be a slight safety concern to have to load on top of a primed rifle. It would also mean that one could not deprime if the rifle was not shot during hunting and one wanted to keep the charge and projectile loaded only. I can also think of backthrust concerns with this 25 acp case. Not in an NEF, but in other makes.

Hopefully I am wrong and someone can enlighten me to the correct workings and loading 'techniques' with this plug. Thanks guys. BuzzKill

Great questions, as I have a new Sidekick and was interested in the .25 ACP conversion myself. Jack.

I use the 25 acp on a side kick and yes,the flash hole is still
there and no,powder doesn't go through when loading any
more than with the factory plug(only a flake or two when
using really fine powders like FFFG).This has not been an
issue for me with over 500 shots through it. and I use
fine powders.Loading is no more unsafe than when using the
factory plug.Aside from the initial cost,I have found no
negatives with this system other than a small amount of
time to deprime/prime the brass and that is very quick and
painless.After using this system,I would never go back to the
209 system.This has been my experience and others' may
be different.I don't see a back thrust problem as the small
rifle primers throw way less fire than a shotgun primer.I don't
know of any problems with using pellets with this system as I don't use them.Hope this helps with your concerns.

Thanks for the update. I have not seen one so your info was helpful. I agree with you, no concerns now that I understand there is still a flash hole. BuzzKill

Remington's official fix for the 209 primer problem is to use a 410-209 primer or the 209 specifically made for Muzzle loaders in the Big Green brand. The 209 problem of popping the slug before good ignition occurs predominantly with the 30 and 50grain pellets, anyway.

I added the Huntsman barrel some years ago. I have had perfect success with the orange primer carrier arrangement on deer. Of course I am not inclined to change, but is there a problem to this system? I don't shoot much, just hunt. Accuracy is great, can't imagine anything easier, once I am set up to hunt. What is the advantage of the .25 deal?

The advantages with the 25 acp system come more into
play when shooting alot.The orange carrier/209 primer
system was too dirty for me when shooting at the range.
The new plug also gives you a hexhead system for
installation/removal(NEF's system for this is crappy).
Also,my groups did improve with the small rifle primers.
If only shooting this rifle a few times for hunting I
probably wouldn't have bothered,but I shoot my sidekick
alot.With the 209 system,after 10 or 12 shots my rifle doesn't
lock up reliably due to all the crud in the breech area,also
the blowback was terrible.
The 25 acp system has been well worth it for me,cleaner,
easier to handle,no more blowback,and better groups.
YMMV.
