Got My New .45/70 BC Today
« on: April 29, 2005, 10:07:35 AM »
Just picked up my new BC today and it is very nice, great peices of Walnut. The Color Case harding could have been a little better on the reciever, they missed the edges on it is showing bare metal, no big deal I wouldn`t think? Anyway, my biggest question is:

The button to open the actrion seams to have alot of play in it, and have to it. When the action is closed, it wiggles up and down alot, like maybe the spring is bad or not attacthed right or? You have to push it allof the way down to break the action and actually it doesn`t even have any pressue to it, until it is almost all of the way down as in there is alot of slop. Is this normal or is the does the break button usually tight and have no play or slop? I almost didn`t buy this one because of it, but everything else was fine including the screws on the butt plate  Any help would be appreciated on the Button slop and/or play.

Thank you-Jack.

Jack, when the action is locked, it's normal for the button to be a little  loose, if it's not loose means there can be a problem with lock up, the latch isn't engaging completely. When I fit a barrel, until I get good latch engagement, the latch release will be tight.

Tim, I just checked the break button on my Sidekick and Parder shotgun, neither of them have the play the BC has, it seams to have alot of play, like its not returning enough when closed. The other 2 guns break the action with a little push and there is pressure back on my thumb, but on the BC, you have to push it down about 1/2 an inch and is very squishy and loose feeling. I have a feeling there is something up? I hope not, as I could have had Wal-Mart send it to NEF for Free, now I may have to ship it to them my self and pay for Shipping, is this right? Do I pay shipping both ways or just 1 way? I just feel it is too sloppy. Jack.

I just checked the gun again, and remeber this one didn`t come with a lock like the first one, not really any oil on the gun or in the action like the first one, and there is a good amount of powder rsidue left in the barrel. Do you think this could have been a return and then re-sold, or is this all normal. This all started with the sloppy break button :( Jack.

I figure I have to push the release button down about 2/3-3/4 of the way down to get the action to break, whereas on my Sidekick and Pardner, only about 1/8-1/4 of the way down. Does this seam right? Jack.

My Handi .223 has a sloppy break open latch handle and so does my Sportster.  The Sportster didn't come that way though, it was tight to start with but it broke open while firing 2/100 during my first trip to the range.  As a result of the Sportster breaking open I sent it back to the factory for repair.  When the Sportster came back home the break open latch was sloppy but it didn't break open while shooting anymore.  I was going to send it back but I checked my Handi and it was the same sloppy way so I just let it be.

They do test fire them, it's always possible it just didn't get cleaned. If you have to send it back, they can either issue a call tag for pickup on their dime or reimburse you for the cost of returning it, they have done both in the past, you don't have to foot the bill if there is something wrong with it. If you decide to return it for repair, just call em first and tell them what's wrong. I'd shoot it first and see how it shoots, if it pops open or any of the typical issues that they can have happen. Clean it good inside and out, make sure the latch and latch shelf are clean and dry.

Slayer I just check the Handi in 30-06 from bass pro,I pick up last week and also will say the latch does have some play in it,it will have about 2/3 travel in downward position when the barrel opens and when the barrel action gets closed the latch does snap into place ,but the play is there also.I did get the trigger lock and also a regular master lock that game with the gun.I will see how the gun shoots if there is any problems with the gun when fired that the barrel action will stay closed and the extactor works before I will send it back. :D

Very good then Gents!! I will shoot it, especially with some strong shells to test it well. If everything works as it should, then the only thing they forgot to give me was the Lock. The lack of Oil in the gun is a little odd though, it is actually quite dry. Yes, about 2/3 travel is about right. The gun is so sweet looking, but I must say, NEF-H&R has to be the most inconsistant company in so many ways on Earth :) Jack.

On a new gun you might also try snapping the action closed very briskly as it may not be going into full lock up. Try snapping the action closed and then see how the button feels. :D

Jack, give em a call or an email, they'll send the lock if you want one....For a $300 gun, you gotta expect something less than perfect, but there is definitely room for improvement in their QC.

slayer I have to say the H@R bc 45-70 is one good looking gun, sleek ,really not that heavy and if it had a 28 inch barrell I would have jump on it .otherwise it a great gun for the money.I also say it not a cheap gun to reload seem the it pricey when it comes to dies, bullets and brass.
GOOD LUCK WITH THE NEW GUN ,ENJOY IT AND HAVE FUN. :D  :D

Thanks guys. actually, if everything works at the range, I will keep it for sure. I did try snapping it smartly and no change to the slop. Tim, I will give you a call a little later, my wife and I are taking my son out today for his birthday :D Thanks-Jack.
