.204 Case Trimming
« on: May 01, 2005, 02:03:05 PM »
I load for .204. I have a Lyman case trimmer. They don't make a 20 caliber pilot for there case trimmer. I want to trim my case"s as some of them are 25 thousand's over max. I bought an RCBS 20 cal. pilot thinking I could turn it down on my drill press, but it"s way to hard.
       Any suggestion"s????????
By the way, It's a Handi. Shoot"s consistant 3/4" group"s with a dirty bbl. Take's 5-7 shot's before it will group!!!.  Drove me crazy when I first got it. Clean bbl. will shoot 4-6 " high. I have 4 other Varmit caliber's. None of them are this touchy!!!!

Hmm, I use the Lee trimmer when I can, but will probably just order an extra 22 cal trimmer pilot for my lyman 500 trimmer and turn it down in the drill press with a file.

i really like those trimmers that lee makes that chuck in to your drill but they don't make one for the 204 so i just use the base off my 223 trimmer and just hold the cutter with my hand .
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

I use an RCBS trimmer, and there isn't a case I can't chuck (of course, I don't load 204 yet). I'm sure that the .204 case is just something necked down to .204 right? Most calibers are these days.
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

That's true but you still need a .20 cal pilot.....Forster is the only one I've seen and it only works with a Forster trimmer.

Lyman makes a #20 pilot....it's just a matter of finding one....Maybe by the time I start reloading for the .204, Lee will have a trimmer out, theirs is the slickest of all that I've checked out and works so much faster than the Lyman/RCBS type.....plus, I champfer the case after trimming while the shell  holder is still hooked up to the drill!!!

Quickdtoo:
I tried turning an RCBS 20 cal. pilot on my drill press with a file and a stone to fit the LYMAN cutter head. NO CAN DO!!!  Metal is way too hard.
I'm going to put the torch to it today and try to soften it. It's only spinning on brass. Don't know why it has to be so hard.

I heated that RCBS pilot to a cherry red, then let it air cool. Made it soft enough that I could turn it down on my drill press. Work's great!!!
