Question on Soule Sight
« on: May 03, 2005, 12:00:41 PM »
Hi all,

Got a Pedersoli S780 Sporting standard in 45-70 a month ago. 1874 sharps, with midrange soule sight, globe front and spirit level.

I got everything set up and went to the range.  After shooting Federal factory loads of 300gr at 300yds, and sighting in, I was getting 2-3" groupings.

However, after taking a break  and shooting again, I noticed that the spring on my soule would let the top of the sight smack me in the forehead.

I have everything set perfectly, and just wondered if I might be missing something.  It seems to slap back on the recoil.

Any thoughts?

Question on Soule Sight

Sounds like one of three things. Either the spring is weak, or you've got a detent notch in the sight base that's not cut deep enough, or the sight upright is in backwards. (A fourth option is a lot of excessive recoil, but probably not that!)
Can you feel a noticeable stop when you put the sight into the upright position? It should sort of lock into the notch. If not, check the screw on the spring, and also check visually to see the notch is wide, and deep enough. Also check to see that the staff is straight up when the sight locs into the notch.
 Hope this helps.

Ok, have checked it out and its in the right way, the sight snaps right into place on the spring.  The spring screw is tight.  I did not examine the notch but  I think this may be the problem.  The notch is too shallow.

Can someone make a suggestion as to what to do in this case.

Sure! Simply take the upright staff off, turn it over, and with a triangle file simply file a deeper notch. Don't get too carried away! Start with a bit deeper, and reassemble it to see how it feels. Don't want to go so deep that it wont fold down easily when you want it to.
