How to you protect your Creedmore sight from damage?
« on: May 04, 2005, 04:22:52 AM »
I received my new Taylor's Quiglye, made by Armi in Italy, and the standard longs distance Creedmore sight.  How's the best way to protect it from getting damaged or from hitting the stock and scratching the comb of the buttstock when folded down?

Would I be better off if I could get screws that I could grip with my thumb and finger and remove the sight when I'm not using it?  I was kinda concerned about finally wearing the threads out of the tang if I repeatedly took the sight off and on.

How does everyone else do it?

Thanks.  :D

Get a sight sack from Shiloh Sharps. They work great.  :D  http://www.shilohrifle.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=23

For my Ballard, I simply bought an inexpensive suede marbles bag from a hobby store. I slip it over and pull the draw strings tight. I think it cost less than $5 at a craft/hobby store. I put a second one over the end of the muzzle to protect the muzzle, and the front globe sight!

I went to a rendezvous type weekend and found a vendor selling deer and cow hide bags for $2 each.  I'm not saying you should got to a weekend show, just planting the idea of using a simple leather bag.

I sewed a cover out of scrap leather. I am sure you should be able to find some thin scrap leather or suede leather around to sew a cover up with. Mine is just wide enough and long enough to cover the sight. Jim

These sight bags are pretty standard fare... I don't know any BPCR shooter who doesn't use them on their vernier sights!

Some people actually take their sight off, and put it in a bag. Others just cover the sight with a bag. The bags that sell as sight bags go way too high! The little unmarked bags like Hiram mentioned are a bargain!

Yea and if you can find some scrap leather which should not be too tough they are free except for your time which does not take that much. Jim

A friend of mine made them from the tongues of old work-boots.  Thin and soft enough leather, and readily available.

I use a quilted frying pan holder. It's the same shape and size as my sight. Send the good lady out to get you a couple. Horsefeathers....

Howdy Pard
I have a 8 year old 1874 Sharps ,have close to 8000 rounds through it and looks it.
I just Bought a Cimarron Big Bore and wasn't going to beat it up ,so I built a wagon box for it and I cover the sight with a leather bag.
   It Works

Old time Sharps shooter "Uncle Waugh" says protect the stock from sight fold-down by fitting a rubber boot around the peep disk. He uses a cupped rubber valve boot of the proper size. Makes for a good eye shade too.

Even a piece of bicycle inner tube slipped over the sight will protect it. May not look so fancy, but it works.
