Size comparison--SP101 vs. S&W K-frame
« on: May 04, 2005, 05:51:15 AM »
Can anyone tell me how the Ruger SP101 compares in overal size against a S&W K-frame? I have an old military shoulder holster in which a Model 10 fits, but quite snugly. I want to carry a .357 in the holster, as this rig will be for hiking, fishing, etc., and the added power would be nice. I suppose a Model 65 will work, but a 3-inch SP101 would be lighter to carry. Do you think this would work?

Have you thought about taking your holster to a gun shop and trying the fit of a 101 3 inch bbl gun?

Dand, I wish I could. Unfortunately, no local dealer stocks a 3-inch SP101. So, I'm basically looking at a special-order or Internet purchase if I decide to go with the SP101. I'm think now that a 65 may be best anyway. The longer barrel and extra weight would make it more pleasurable to shoot with Magnums, while only adding less than half a pound of weight.

:cb2: I have them both, and the SP101 frame is considerably smaller than the K-frame. Plus you're dropping down from a 6 round cylinder to a smaller 5 round cylinder. Therefore, the Ruger is going to be pretty loose in the K-frame holster. If you don't have a safety strap, or flap over the top, I wouldn't suggest carrying the SP101 that way. I'd either stick with a M65 like you mentioned, or get the SP101 and a Uncle Mikes shoulder rig if you really want to carry the smaller gun.

66 K-frame next to the SP101 ...
