I have had no luck in my lake this year. May fly hatch is on too. Rainbows and Splake in there, stocked by the cottagers.
I will have to try some streamers next time out

first time i ever been hog hunting we came up on the trap. i came through the thick wall of brush and saw the first wild hog i ever seen in RL and she saw me and got scared and started ramming her head into the cage trying to get me (EXTREAMLY STRONG FOR SUCH A SMALL ANIMAL!!) raised the 270 just in case hehehe. after finding out how tough the 150-200 pounder was after shooting her in her mouth with a ruger p-90 45 acp she just shook her head like a seizuer err somethin then settled down and acted like nothin happend by chewing up on either tooth bone bullet in her bloody mouth then ramming the cage after me again. givs me a reason to be afraid of the woods at night. i like thechallenge of a real smart, powerful, tough, mean animal that is free game all year round and the rush of thinking that it can kill me just as easily as i can kill it. makes all the danger worth all the pride when  your standing over a wear wolf hehe.

I'm kind of surprised at some of the results so far.

I would expect Whitetails and Elk to lead the pack, but I would have though moose would be higher upo.  I've hunted black bear and I think they're rated higher here than they should be.  Mule deer have never interested me from the stories I've read or videos I've seen, but with the results here, I may take another look at them.

I think your looking at it from a Canadian perspective Rick. Remember a lot of these guys have never seen a moose in the wild, or hunted the bug free days of fall.

I thought much the same, until I started thinking about it. How many wild boar for example have we had a chance to hunt?

So true!

If it weren't for the Treaty of The Americas, and 911 with all the BS associated with it, I'd probably be planning a hog hunt of some sort right now.  I'd also be looking at these (relatively) inexpensice cow elk hunts in Colorado.

Well whitetail seems to be what I'm always hunting .... even on days when ruffed grouse will be the only thing I'll shoot at.  Can't seem to get them out of my head.... but I do hope to try a black bear only hunt next fall as well.

Let me know when you shoot another bull........The meat up here from the bulls and alrger cows is too tough to be a "good whack of meat"

And to Lawdog and Bearhntr, DUMP THOSE METHODS AND CALL OUT THE HOUNDS! It's fun and exciting.....never know what will happen....We actually run them off bait and candyboxes here though

Maine_Hound_Hunter,

I used to run hounds when I was much younger, had a pack of 16 at one time.  Still have a Bluetick as a hunting buddy but he only runs varmints for me.  The one bear I killed ahead of hounds was, after being run over hill an yonder, so over heated he wasn't worth eating.  My spot and stalk method works for me, thank you anyway.  Lawdog

Never had that happen with bear before here....Weird

Anyways, I've tried spot and stalk before, but it just doesn't work for me...Different people like different things and I'm just a person who loves hearing a hound running a bear through the woods with all it's got, and besides that I'm not quiet enough to stalk one, which is why I normally sit in a stand during deer season.

But anyways, if spot and stalk works for you, and appeals to you, go for it. I just have "A love for the hounds"

Well, off of your list, I'd say Whitetails.  None of the other stuff is even remotely close to here, except for black bears in the upstate, and bear hunting just doesn't excite me (I personally can't fathom eating a bear so hunting it just has no meaning.  If you like it though, more power to ya ;)).

Overall though (and not on your list), I'd have to go with ducks.  They're not big game, but to me it's much more fun duck hunting (more action and very, very challenging).  Not to mention there's just so much variety.  There's enough species of duck flying around out there that you truly never know what you might come home with.

MGMorden,

If you need exciting then try bow hunting Black Bears.  NO BAITING or hunting them from a tree stand, use the 'Spot N Stalk' method.  That way you will be closer to them(35 - 40 yards max) and more on their terms.  If that isn't exciting enough then do it by yourself.  Also the meat from a well prepared Black Bear is great eating.  Like a hog they need to be bled well(getting all of the blood out is important) and make sure you don't touch the meat with any part of the outside of the hide.  If the bear has been feeding on roots and wild fruit then it will be even better.  Give Black Bear hunting a try sometime.  Even handgun hunting them will give you a thrill.  Lawdog

I intended ducks to fall unser the small game catagory, thanks for your reply.
I've  spent many hours in a duck blind, surrounded by ice fog, waiting for sunrise.
I still remember taking a newbie out for the fist time. We got in there a bit early, and were sitting in the pitch blackness sipping coffee, when we heard the distant honk of a Canada goose.
Booom goes the newbies 12 guage with a blinding flash of flame, GEESE he squeeled, puctuated by my cousin pushing him into the water to cool off.

Grew up in Oregon--hunting blacktail deer. I have killed mule deer, whitetails and blacktail deer. I love hunting blacktail--up close in the thickest brush. Some hunters consider them the most difficult trophy of all. I have taken several bucks point-blank that even hunting partners looking over my shoulder could not see. They can be called in with mouth callers and respond to rattling during the rut. We have experienced some breath taking moments when they come in at a flat out dead run in the thick cover.

I would say White Tail deer, they are exciting to hunt and very elusive, you need good skills to hunt trophy white tails in the North east, plenty of early season scouting will help you, but there is so much land and so few deer deer per mile, Buck to doe ratio is low, not like hunting the southern states they are like rabbits, up here far and few, but Mature bucks can get rather large in this region. Nothing like jumping a good deer in his bed on a still stalk, or staying very still as a big buck approaches, waiting for the right moment to take aim, to me this is one animal that I love to hunt, Moose are too stupid and big to find or miss;) Hogs are ok,I like the idea they can charge you in defense and turkey hunting is a good challenge, using your calling skills to attract Toms, but to see a good scrap/rub or a big hoof print in the dirt, or the sight of a huge rack on the ridge gets my blood going, the adventure of hunting white tail deer is the best. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

a nice challenge (big bucks)   the nastier the day...... the better the

I say White Tail and for only one reason...I can hunt it effectively and I like the taste of the meat(I grew up on it) and also the amount of meat you get without killing yourself trying to get it home...if I could afford to raise Whitetail for food I would choose the Grey Fox or Bob Cat because with out using calls they are,in my opinion, the most elusive animals I have ever hunted or seen...
