Patch Lube
« on: May 05, 2005, 03:07:28 AM »
Who lubes and with what?  I use Lyman Moly stick lube on most of my patches, and occasionally will use lee Liquid Alox (for water proofing hopefully) if my hunting has a chance to be on the damp side.  Have a buddy that patches for BP and he doesn't lube at all.

Patch lube

For black powder (real black powder) I use the following.

I use a .030 over powder wad, .125 SPG lube, .060 wad beneath bullet.
(the .060 top wad prevents the lube cookie from being hammered into the cupped base of the bullet)

I have shot up to 40 consecutive rounds without wiping or hard fouling.

The last thing I want is a sticky or soaked patch. If its sticky it wont leave the bullet and dirt sticks to it which does the bore no good. If the patch is soaked it looses its strength like wet toilet paper.

If I can wipe between shots then no lube at all.

i don't use patch lube....I do use a chamois cloth "soiled" with graphite to dirty the leading edge of the patch and that is all. BTW< I got this from an article written by Frank mayer in Dec 1934 for American Rifleman, and it works well.

Yep, it works. You can thin it to suit yourself or use it as is. Use a grease cookie; the Rooster will not soften fouling.

Forgot to tell you; I wipe between shots when shooting paper patched.

The Rooster Jacket I'm refering to is the one that comes in the 16 oz. bottle which is much to thin for grease cookie. I just wanting something to keep the patch from absorbing water from the blow tube, and not conflict with black powder. My grease cookie will be SPG or something like that.

I guess I wasn't clear on that; I use the liquid Rooster Jacket for patch lube and an SPG cookie to soften fouling.

i was using bore butter  but ran out and think its way over priced and over rated   now i use crisco works great i  have been lubing the patch compleaty  on the inside  and rolling it around the bullet  holds the patch and it still comes off  use a card  and wad under it    evan workd great in speed loaders
