Council backs bill to let county stiffen gun laws

Critics say measure won't be effective


The Milwaukee Common Council on Tuesday endorsed a bill in Madison that would allow the county to establish tougher gun laws, despite objections that the measure would go too far and do little to stem violence.

Those who buy guns from private citizens would face the same criminal background checks they would if they bought the gun at a store.

Critics said that is too much bureaucracy to put on private citizens, and they noted that criminals are unlikely to abide by such rules.
