« on: May 06, 2005, 05:35:20 AM »
Ace sporting goods in washington, PA had three cases left as of this past weekend. Their website is www.acefirearms.com . I do not know if they will ship them or not. Good luck, I bought 1000 from them.

Pete; I asked the local dealer here about 209-4 primers and he looked at me like I was nuts!

What is the brand name of the 209-4 primers you're talking about?
I think if I can find them here, I'll probably "rat-hole" a brick of them!

Thanks!

Do you guys really see much difference between these and the standard 209s?  Last time I looked into it, it seemed like there was less "spark" but just as much fouling.  They didn't seem to burn any cleaner.

I know that some would argue that 209's push the load off the charge and that results in decreased accuracy.  I guess, if you're experiencing this, the 209-4s might be better.

Personally, I get tremendous accuracy with the 209s.  Yes, they're dirty.  MUCH dirtier than a 25ACP or a 22 hornet primer.  But are the 209-4s really any cleaner than the 209s????  Has anyone experienced this?

I'm waiting to see what Rems 209 black powder primer is going to be.  I've got a hunch it's going to be a 209-4 primer in a fancy wrapper.   :D

Before going to the 25 acp system,I tried some of the 209-4 primers
and they were no cleaner in my gun. They did seem to be not as
hot,but left just as much gunk for me.YMMV.I used 'em up in
shotshells.

they are made by remington and have been discontinued - I've read a lot about guys trying to find them to help cure the "crud ring" in some guns - they seem to work for some people. Remington is supposed to be coming out with a lower power 209 for ML this summer / fall, but for now, these are the lowest power. I haven't shot mine as of yet, but I did get the "crud ring" with pyrodex pellets and CCI mag 209 primers - it was so bad i had to push through and remove the breech plug after each shot. I thought the barrel was defective, sent it to T/c - they claimed nothing wrong - using T/C Cleaner #13 swab between shots helped a lot, but who carries that in the woods? Your mileage may vary, lol!!!

That would be very cool if Remington comes out with a low powered 209 primer to stop the crud. I bet they sell very well, I know I will be opne to purchase them  Jack.

Rem 209-4 :?: I hear its suppose to be a 410 primer. I've been handloading shotshells for the past 15 years, thousands upon thousands of them in 12, 20 , 28, and 410. I try to stay on top of all the latest and greatest components available to handloaders. I searched through all my reloading data old stuff through 2005 reloaders manuals both in paper form and online. I can't find any listings for a Rem 209-4. In 410 or any other gauge. The only Remington primers I see listed are:

REM 209 hottest of the brand.
REM 209P And REM 97* These two are interchangeable.
REM 209STS.
As far as the REM 209-4 I can't find any information on them in any of the big powder manufacturers data. If someone finds any info please pass it on. I can't find it. Its a curiosity thing. I  have a 25 ACP conversion sitting on my reloading bench waiting to be tried out. My Encore is set up with a 223 Heavy BBL right now and it will probrably stay like that till the fall. Then I'll start playing with the 209x50 BBl.

Thanks

Yea,I have been reloading for shotgun a long time as
well and have never seen load data for the 209-4's
either.I found them at an old gun shop after seeing them
for sale at D&R Sports online and thought I'd try them
before spending the money on the 25 acp system in
my sidekick.I used 'em up in some light 20 g. loads
for Skeet(glad I didn't buy too many  )

THIS INFORMATION WAS TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE "SUPPORT" SECTION ON THE REMINGTON WEB SITE!
This info should help clear up some of the confusion regarding the 209-4 primers!  I still don't understand why I can't find any locally!

  Question
  Can primers be used interchangeably?

  Answer
Generally, no. The 97* and 209P (Premier) are interchangeable in Alliant powder shotshell data. The 57* and the 209 (non-Premier) were both different from the 209P (Premier). The 57* was smaller in diameter, and the 209 (non-Premier) was slightly hotter. The new 209 STS primer is interchangeable with the 209P (Premier) primer in most recipes. It is always best to check with the powder manufacturer when you have a question about a specific recipe.

The 209-4 is a primer specifically made for use in .410 shotshell loads although there are no current recipes listed by the powder manufacturers using it. The 209-4 should not be used in gauges other than the .410 due to its lower energy level.

In pistol cartridges, the 1-1/2 small pistol primer should not be used in the 357 Magnum, 357 SIG or the 40 S&W. The 5-1/2 small pistol primer is the proper selection for these rounds.

In rifle cartridges, the 6-1/2 small rifle primer should not be used in the 17 Remington, 222 Remington or the 223 Remington. The 7-1/2 BR is the proper small rifle primer for these rounds.

Warning: When primers are selected incorrectly, misfires, damage to your firearm, and/or personal injury may occur. Visit the ballistics tables on our website. Recommended primers for each rifle and pistol cartridge are listed in these tables.
