What's a used Huntsman worth?
« on: May 06, 2005, 05:43:55 AM »
The following is part of a post I made under the Centerfire section in a topic about .35 Remingtons. I posted it as an aside but would really value some opinons from those of you with knowledge about Huntsmans. I will include part of another post I made in the same thread for you considerastion, Thanks, I think I fouled up by passing up on the gun....<><.... :(

"By the way I'm kicking myself now, I was in Maine 2 days ago and stopped at Kittery Trading Post. I saw some used H&R's there, a 12 gauge Ultra Slug, used, like new, with a Laminated Camo stock for $150, and a Huntsman with a NT serial # that needed a good cleaning, it had a Bushnell 3200 Elite 3x9 (Rainguard?) on Weaver see through rings. They wanted $175 for the combo, the breech plug came out easily but there looked to be some corrosion on it as well as a little tiny bit just ahead of the chamber, that MIGHT have cleaned up with a brush. They were willing to sell me the gun alone for $80. I did not take it since I have my old but servicable and accurate TC Renegades and the H&R's are not legal in my home state (  :(  :?      ) of "The People's Liberal Republic of Taxachusetts". Now I am kicking myself for not buying the gun. I did not like the reduced and very close and small eye relief of the scope at 9 power and even at 3 power the eye relief seemed to be critical!!! If I was not just the right distance behind the scope the image was compromised. It surprised me since I have heard nothing but good about these scopes here. It was not even close to the comfort and ease of use of my Simmons. Perhaps it was a bad scope but anyway I am now upset at myself for not buying the Huntsman for $80.00. In retrospect it had no problems a good cleaning would not have cured, KICK ME!!!....<><.... :( "

" Before I left the store I brought the gun back to the used ML rack and their was a nice old (middle aged like me!!!) guy from NH who spoke with a slight European accent, he was looking at the used ML's and of course, being the nice fool I am I showed him the gun and put it in his hands telling him what a great deal it was and how wonderful these Huntsmans shoot and the cost and value of the Bushnell Elite 3200 scope. As I left he was putting it on lay-away, I suggested to him he get a breechplug wrench also since it did not come with one...I was thinking of getting the whole setup and offering the scope here to someone since some here like them but it may all be a moot point now....<><.... :(

What do you guys think a Huntsman with a NT serial number (2003) is worth? It had a scope rail but needed a rear sight which had been removed, the front sight was in place however. I would prefer the newer metal sights instead of the old plastic sights.

Also what is a used Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9(x42?) with the raingaurd lens coating worth? This scope had one scratch in the bluing and was made in Japan, I am not sure if they are still made there or (shudder) China...Do all of that model have such limited eye relief?...Thanks for any info"

MSP Ret,

I hate to make you feel worse than you do, but the 3200 Elite runs around $175-$200 new. Chances are though it may be a bad scope that someone thought they would mount on the Huntsman to sell it faster. I wouldn't sweat missing the deal too bad, if you can't use the Huntsman in Mass.

MSP Ret, you passed up the deal of a life time. Busta is correct the scope new is worth $175.00 with a great gaurantee. So if you still have a chance to pick-up the gun or scope go for it... :D

Thanks guys, I think I did foul up on the gun, for $80 it would have been fun to shoot at the range and I could use it in Maine. I did check on the scope and they can be purchased new in Maine for $189- $199, used they are priced at around $125 - $130. I also did some checking about the real limited eye relief and the poor optics and I have just about decided the scope was not defective thats just how the Bushnells are. My Simmons and old Weavers are MUCH better than the Bushnells I have looked through, new and used alike. I agree on the guarantee, it is great for the 3200 and 4200 Elite's. I checked the warranty card and the optics on a new 3200 Elite and it was the same. I think I will stay with my Simmons WTC's or go to a Whitetail Expedition, if I come into some money I will get a Luepold VX-1 instead. I have always wanted a Luepold scope anyway just hated to spend that much...my Simmon's have performed flawlessly for half the price!!! AND with great eye relief to boot!!!

That said the gun was the best part of the deal, and I passed on it!!!....<><.... :(

MSP Ret, Don't feel so bad you will run into another good deal and it might be better. After, reading your comments in both the rifle and muzzle loader forums, I believe you will be back in the guns shops looking for good deals. I agree with you some day I will own a Luepold but, I own both Simmons and BSA's and the scopes have not let me down even in the worst conditions.

Thanks for the good encouraging words mangulator. I did see either a .444 or a .450 in a shop in Maine a month or so ago (did I perhaps see both?) but I am not sure which shop it was...I am not really interested in the .450 but the .444 sounds interesting. Now to come up with some way to pay for it if and when I see it again!!!....<><....

Regardless of taxachussetts, I'd pick up a Huntsman barrel for one of your obvious frames! What is Hubbard charging for one of his drop in .50 barrels Anyway? I have a ball at the range with .490 Hornady pure lead balls. Terrific accuracy, and very cheap, with just about any powder...
Swab barrel, and clean plug every 6 - 10 shots. I switch to Powerbelts for deer, but would have confidence in my practice roundballs....
Can anybody find a more accurate deal than Huntsman....? I can't!!!
You could also buzz over to NY for the inagural early season muzzleloader deal My vote for the best deal in shooting is the Huntsman barrel!!!

tscott, what kind of accuracy do you get with round ball in your Huntsman? I have always liked shooting them in my TC's and much prefer them for hunting over the Maxiballs and bullet style projectiles for ML's....<><....

Accuracy is good, if you stay within the limitations of the load. At 50 yards
roundball is 2" high and right on bull, with 70 gr of 777. With the second and each ensuing shot it tracks 2" high and to the left. Cleaning the barrel restores POI. Oh I'm using .10 lubed pillow ticking.
I've read the local papers here in NC (I'm originally from the Hudson Valley), the last 2 "book" bucks down here were shot with inlines, using patched balls.
That being said, I love the all around performance of 295 Powerbelts, with 90 gr 777 in the Huntsman. All 7 of my muzzleloader bucks, in the last 4 years were 1 shot on the spot kills. Now that I know where the round ball hits, I would be confident with that on deer as well. I have had no problem with the red primer carriers, as well as the breach plug, as long as I clean every 6 - 10 shots... No misfires in 200 shots as well.
Man there's got to be a place in the dunes near the Bourne Bridge where you can give a Huntsman a workout!

Yea, MSP RET.... I used to do that ironman triathlon each year in your neck of the woods. I retired from all that at 55, including my career job.
Relocated from the Northeast. I run a gym now, and of course do my workouts. Helps me in the Southern Mts. for deer. Love to hunt like a kid, with my Huntsman. Shot deer in 6 decades now. Feel like I got a coupla more. Can't wait for the 1st early muzzleloader season in NY this year...

Small world tscott, Perhaps we have run some races or Sprint Triatholons together. I have run Falmouth about 6 times and done half marathon distances. I was doing the sprint triathalons in this area before I retired 4.5 years ago. Since then I have had both hips relpaced with tiatainium ones and 3 bones chips removed from my right elbow about 12 days ago. I used to work out, a lot, before I retired but the hips and elbow have slowed me down a bit. At least I now know why my daily runs went from 8 to 6 to 4 to 3 miles a day just before I retired. After he looked at the x-rays and before surgury, the surgeon asked me if I was in pain walking on the hips.  I told him walking was not to bad but sleeping and running hurt!!! He could not believe I was running on the hips. He now says I can run on a soft track or in the woods but not on pavement, he also tells he I can ski again, but my wife says NO!!! :( . I guess it's no downhill skiing for me, I wonder if it's the skiing or the young single girls on the mountain :-D !!!. I never thought I would miss running so much. I hated it in High School double session football practice, boot camp, College wrestling workouts, local Police Academy, State Police Academy, NESPAC training, but I got to like it when I did it on my own, just a glutton for punishment I guess.... ....<><....

Yea, I had a real good day at Falmouth... I think 92. I'll have to check that print that they give you....
I don't run a bit anymore, and I don't miss it.  Switched to the bike, and do a fair amount of training on an indoor bike as well. I get the same calorie burn and the cardiovascular benefit as well. Strength train total body 3 times a week, and stay within 10 lbs of my ideal weight. Sure does make a difference while hunting. Most of the guys that I started deer hunting with in the late 50's are done, because they didn't take care...
physically. I prescribe exercise all the time..it's now my living! My advice for those over 40 is alternating days of resistance bike training, and power walking most days of the week, 40 - 60 minutes. If you ever go the Huntsman route you will love making up loads for roundball...
