Just thought I would post what I have found...I've talked to theis gunsmith and he will do this work for us...and has done quite a few Handi rifles...he understands them and is set up to do this...

He charges $250 for reboring...+$25 for opening the throat...or +$50 for rechambering to a different base cartridge...he also does the Ackley Improved cartridges...I've got a 26" 25-06 that's just crying to be rebored to 338-06...and when this is done...I'll post it and let you all know...

I just talked to him.....I'm on my way down to him with my 25-06 for a rebore to 338-06!!! :eek:  Be back in a couple hours!!

Good work and thanks for the tip.  All I have to do now is order my -06 based accessory barrel and I too will be off and runnin.   Keep us informed to the progress of your and Quick's 338's as I will get in line when the barrel returns.  BuzzKill

My 25-06 is now in his hands!!! Should have it back sometime in June. $275 covers a rechamber if needed, rethroat and rebore....the ejector conversion would be more from what I understood. His shop is clean and neat, well organized. He's in the process of getting ready to move this summer, so better hurry up and get your barrels/rifle to him. He only needs the barrel for our 25-06 to 338-06 rebore, other changes would be different so it would be a good idea to talk with him or email him first. He does a first rate muzzlebreak, too if anyone is interested. It is screwed on the muzzle, but you will not be able to tell where the barrel ends and the break starts, it's that good!!! I was impressed with his work and shop, so I would not hesitate to recommend him.

His stocks are also great looking and super light!!! But probably too rich for most of us Handi-holics at a minimum of $450 each, probably closer to $500-$600 or more....even for a group buy. Setup for a new stock IF he can modifiy an existing mold would still be about $600 before any stocks were sold. :cry:

That's great Quick...I just got off the phone with himm...Andy...just to modify the ejector for a rechamber...probably around $25...so your looking at $75 total...

And what possibilities would a 270 barrel present?

Guys:

You really need to give him a call...he will be more than glad to field your inquiries...he needs a mimimum of 18" barrel to work with...and can do rebores down to .550" OD on the muzzle end...but...you really need to call him...or e-mail him to discuss ANY work you need or want...he's real easy to talk with...and extreamly knowledgeable on our Handi's...

Varminter...I do believe the $50 dollars is for any rechambering as long as it will fit...

Thanks for the info 8) ...I just may send him my BC barrel and get him to lengthen the chamber ...my (smith?) down here keeps giveing me the run around!!! :x

ooh, I have a 308 bull barrel that shoots ok not great but haven't really worked with it too much, 165 did better than the 150's but I have 3 other 308's as well??? the extractor on this one doesn't drop, have the parts & info but have not got into the extractor to fix it. This could be rechambered & bored to something else?? what though. Lots of meat in this barrel to work with. I'll think on it maybe that 405 winchesterIdon't really know toomany decisions :eek:

The problem you run into with the 308 case...is finding a suitable rechamber cartridge.. the 405 has a base diameter of .461...the 308 has a base diameter of .470.and being a 22" barrel...you won't gain the additional velocity as you would with going with a 26" or 24" barrel...but If I had to redo a 22" 308 barrel into something else it would most likely be a 30-06AI for me...or if reboring a 338-06 AI...but again...your not going to gain as much velocity as you would with a 26" barrel...and you have to have the barrel set up properly to shoot factory loads...other wise your kinda defeating the purpose of going the AI route in the first place...

Why not go for the 358 Win?  Perfect from the base 308 case and still "some" factory ammo, not much but a ton of brass and bullets available.  Just use 308 brass and neck up.  A one step process.

A 1 in 14 twist was suggested to me.

I believe a great rechamber/rebore option would be a 38-55 Target barrel to 405 Winchester!!! 28" barrel and a great  300gr jacketed spitzer at 2400 fps.....oh doggies!!!!

That would be a good choice for reboring provided the throat wasn't too long...and that has been the problem with the 308 Handi's all along...even my308 Bull barrelled one...but a very good choice for a tight chamber...and Quicks choice for a 28" 38-55 rebore and rechamber is too...man oh man both of these would be real winners in my book...Lyman shows the old Winchester Model 88 which it was made for with a 1-12 twist...and you certainly can load up to 35 Whelen levels with the right loads...and ...since your going to rebore...you can get your twist rate that you want...

What burns my butt...is we have to spend all this extra cash to get what we really want in a Handi...  :cry:

But...to have a cut rifled barrel in them...it's the only way to have it done...for now...hmmmmm...I wonder if I can get my old Survivor barrel back from my neighbor...now that he has his 270 WSM A-Bolt...????? I wonder if hw would want a like new 243 set up...????? Naaaaaa...I got way too  many irons in the fire right now...
