NightFox, coyotes are not totally nocturnal, but like most all predators they are more active at night. Sounds to me like maybe you could be doing something wrong if your hunting at night and can't get a coyote closer then 300 yards.
Because you say the coyotes only come out at night also tells me they probably get shot at alot and called alot. You should be seeing coyotes in the day here and there.

F.....What moon phase do you usually hunt at night? Full or New or?
G.....Have you noticed the coyotes going downwind on you alot at night?
H.....Are you holding the light right on them?
I......Do you ever turn the light off?
J......What kind of call are you using?
K......If you're using an e-caller what sounds do you use?
L......How do you set up your stand at night?
