You guys talk about getting coyotes in within a 100yds. How in the world do you get them so close? I have hunted them many times and have never got one in under 300yds. Where I live of the coyotes are night dwellers. You only see them out in the very late evening or hear them at nights. I have tried mny different things but have never managed to get them very close.

A squeaker call. Mine is from a babies toy. You know the kind that squeak when you squeeze them. The toy was ruined but the little brass squeaker still worked so I took it with me the next time I went hunting. It's about an 3/4 of an inch across and I stick it in the corner of my mouth. It makes the softest squeaks and moans and it really brings in the critters. Lawdog

Do you use this squeaker at night or during the day. I only hunt at night. Our area is not over populated with coyotes but they are coming in more and more. I have seen atleast 4 different ones.

I use my squeaker pretty much every time I go calling. Sometimes critters stop behind trees or brush and I use it to get them to step out where I can get an open shot. Remember a squeaker is just another call to use when calling. Lawdog

Have you tried a decoy? At night, it wouldn't be much good, but in faint light early or late, it might do the trick.

Cover and concealment! Cover and concealment for you. Cover and concealment for the coyote to use to get close to the dinner bell you are ringing, without being seen.

In Montana I have pulled coyotes that I have seen way across the wheat stubble by setting up so the coyote has an approach along a weed line or coulee. I set up 50 or so yards away from these obstacles.

The other thing I have done is to use one of my black and white rat terriers as a decoy. When calling, my dog will move around and sniff at every gopher hole that it can find in the area. I don''t know why but when coyotes checks over the sound from a distance and sees only this little black and white dog moving around, they seem to throw caution to the wind and come running across open ground.

Called one up with a jackrabbit call this morning...as soon as I saw her at 300 yards I dropped the call and gave her some lip squeeks...she tried to wind me but came all the way into 50 yards before stopping and giving me a still shot...never knew what hit her, 22/250 thru the engine room! Lip squeeks (or you can buy a hand held squeeker) usually do the trick to pull them in close...DO NOT OVERCALL, this will result in alot of woulda, coulda, shoulda on your behalf. -GB2

Find some cover if you can. If you're in an open field, find a grassy spot or a hay bail or water tank or something to break up your oultline. Coyotes will move in cover if at all possible. So set up with the open area downwind of you while facing into the wind or cross wind with an eye to the downwind. If possible, get as close to the treeline as you can without exposing yourself too much. Also coyotes have very good eyesight so don't move if they're scanning for you from 300 yards. Wait until they're moving to set up the shot. It is said that coyotes can pinpoint a sounds location to within 15 feet, so if the dog can hear where the sound is coming from and doesn't see anything that looks like a critter in trouble he gets kind of confused and starts to wonder what's up, but if there's an obstruction between him and what he hears he'll invetigate. If you hear a sound in your house and you can see where it came from you probably won't get up to investigate, but if it came from the bedroom where you can't see it, you'll probably get up and go check it out. Same thing.

ive killed most of my coyotes with a shot gun- id say you makin bad stands- get to some thicked cover, even at night. cut down the volume of the calls- use some fox pee- a cheap $5 stuffed animal from wal-mart- i put a decoy heart in mine, got some fiber glass tent poles and cut em down into a 3 part section and stake it in the open 20 yds in front and parrell with the wind---never down wind. try these tricks- i think theyll help you. ive shot only a handful of yotes past 100yds.

It works so well that trading my .22-250 in for a .22 Hornet (read adding a hornet to my arsenal) has become a high priority.

NightFox, coyotes are not totally nocturnal, but like most all predators they are more active at night. Sounds to me like maybe you could be doing something wrong if your hunting at night and can't get a coyote closer then 300 yards.
Because you say the coyotes only come out at night also tells me they probably get shot at alot and called alot. You should be seeing coyotes in the day here and there.

I'd like to try and help but Need to know more..........

A.....Where are you hunting?
B.....What is the terrain like?
C.....Are you using a red light?
D.....Are you keeping the light going the whole stand?
E.....You hunting with a partner?
F.....What moon phase do you usually hunt at night? Full or New or?
G.....Have you noticed the coyotes going downwind on you alot at night?
H.....Are you holding the light right on them?
I......Do you ever turn the light off?
J......What kind of call are you using?
K......If you're using an e-caller what sounds do you use?
L......How do you set up your stand at night?

I agree with what others have said, set up on or in the thick stuff. Coyotes can be patterned too. If you see one in an area a couple of times you can set up on that area and ambush him.

SDS GEN, Coyotes can be Patterned? Maybe so, but how do you know it's the same coyote? It could be another coyote just passing through.
I'm sure a coyote well hang around a good feeding area like maybe an alfalfa field, but they also move around alot. Interesting statement, maybe there is something to it, thanks.

I 'm a bit late, but I'm new to this site.
I hunt Wa farms & timber north of Portland OR. Most shots less that 200 yards.
First be patient. When they're spotted (out past 100 yards) stop calling - and only call while trotting - when they stop to look - don't call. It will be harder to locate YOU.
Less than 100 yards - there's only one call I use. The KISS OF DEATH. It's hands-free, and wallet-free. Just pucker up and make 3-5 quick squeaks - by kissing the air.
Last year I took a 'Yote and 30 yards with a handgun. She'd hung up about 100 yards out and mouth calls couldn't coax her in closer. It doesn't get any easier than that. Good luck.

Hello from Georgia,

Here is a tried and true tactic that has worked for me numerous times. As soon as I get set up, I take the fishing pole with the plug, and I throw it in some nearby weeds or bushes. When calling I gently pull on the line which shakes the bushes. This usually adds the realism of a stranded animal struggling in the brush, while keeping their focus off of you. Hey, don't laugh until you try it !!

I like your tactic. I've got to give it a try. The meadow I like to hunt was cut for hay late in the fall, so it is pretty bare. Reckon if a little furry toy rat on the line would work in that situation?

I have been sitting in a tp blind hunting deer all week. Seen lots of coyotes and cats. Blind keeps the scent contained.

When I varmint hunt, which will start next week, I put out a stuffed rabbit doll I took from the kids and (don't laugh) put one of my bobble head turkey decoys by it. It works great. The coyote is always ready to steal a meal and figures he can whip a hawk. And I start by using a cheap electronic caller that has a range of about 50'.

pd555 that's great. If a coyote will come a runnin on a turkey and hare, he'd probably do the same with a Crow decoy too. I know when I'm cutting hay in the summer those crows will swoop down on young cotton tails peckin and tossin'em round before eating them.

That small blind you mentioned may be just the thing I want to try also. Thanks guys for your input. Some, of it is bound to help in my quest for yotes this winter.
