.45/70 Speer Idaho Territory 405 gr. All Lead Bullets
« on: May 07, 2005, 03:03:49 AM »
Has anyone tried these bullets in their .45/70? I have a B/C and think they look cool, as they are all lead and rugged looking, 405 gr. to cover anything, and they have a protective coating on them to protect against leading. They are also swagged instead of cast like most bullets of this type. They say they are for plinking and cowboy shooting, but can they take a deer-black bear-elk? How about the performance? One thing I do know, my T/C Maxi balls are all lead and they do a wonderfull job on game!! Any comments good or bad would be much appreciated :D Jack.

I haven't tried them out of a BC...but did try them out of my Marlin 1895...wasn't impressed with them...and they do lead when driven hard...The price is ok...but I much prefere the Cast Performance line...the 405 grain  WLNGC is my favorite cast bullet...while not the cheapest...it did give superb groups...

Mac is right on, the 405gr WLNGC is a fantastic shooting bullet, I haven't used it on game yet, but all that I've read about it says it's as good as it gets! The second from the right is one of em loaded for my 45-120 BC. They're $14 for 50 @ Cabelas. They also make it in 440gr and 460gr with slightly different meplats.

Thanks guys. I am glad you told me about the leading as I will be shooting full powered loads for deer-bear-boar. I will try some of the Cast or Jacketed bullets. I don`t mind paying a little more if they are good stuff and group well :D Jack.

I don't know, I don't load it hot in the 45-120, I shoot it at about 1700fps, it shoots great, good enough for me to order 500 more of em for shooting paper cuz they're cheap, 500 @ $71 shipped from Cabelas!!! I will shoot the 405gr, 440gr or 460gr Cast Performance for hunting.

OK Quick, with that being said, will the Remington 405 bullet at 1700 FPS be enough, up to 100 yards in  a .45/70 be enough to cleanly take any Whitetail-Black bear or Boar? If so, I am so there for that price!! Thanks-Jack.

Slayer - the 405 GR. Remington is more than enough. It's all I use in my Marlin and Buffalo Classic. The Marlin load is 1620 fps. They behave like a slug from a slug gun. No instant kills but nothing walked more than 30 yards either. The Buffalo Classic load shots about 1260 fps. I have killed 2 hogs with this load. One bullet went through a 5 inch sapling and broke the neck of a 180 lb boar hog. Now that's power and penetration. With all the weight, you don't have to push the bullet real fast. A bowling ball doesn't have much velocity but will knock down more pins than a 22 will.  Try them you'll like them and they are not real expensive either. :D

Thanks alot fellas :D I will try some of the Remington 405`s, but not the factory, I don`t care for the crimp in the case, that just freaks me out a little to much, especially since I will be reloading the brass. Jack.

Jack, best buy em whilest you can, Rem is no longer selling them as a component, big suppliers like Cabelas and Midway may be able to get them in bulk and resell them, but that remains to be seen. Midway has been out of them for a while and doesn't expect any until the end of May and they may not get them then, they've already changed the due date from 4/25 to 4/30 to 5/30!!! Several shooters at MarlinOwners contacted Rem and were told it hasn't been sold by them as a component since   2004, so the stocks are drying up all over.

Very sad news. I wonder why Remongton is doing this, if it is a popular bullet? Makes no sence to me. Jack.

There are links in this previous thread with Remington's responses, basically they say it's not a big seller, but I think they stopped selling it so they could sell more of their ammo cuz they still sell it in loaded ammo.
