My wife (and just-graduated-from-college daughter) left yesterday for a an 8-day cruise.  Sort of a Mother's Day/Graduation "girl" thing.

I had zero interest.  Guess I'm a landlubber!

Oh man...  cruises are the way to go in my opinion.  If you sail on the right line the staff waits on you hand and foot,  most all of the on board entertainment is included in the price of the cruise, and the food is incredible, the drinks are cheap and they will just keep bringing it to you.  :mrgreen:

I'd rather spend the money on a guided hunt....I'm not much into having someone wait on me hand and foot or drinking that much. I can't even remember the last time I had a drink!!! :roll:

I agree on cruises being a "girl" thing. If my wife and I ever do go on one the only one considered would be an Alaskan cruise, but I'd rather drive through Alaska!!!....<><.... :grin:

Alaskan cruise

MSPret mentioned an Alaskan cruise.Linda and I have talked about doing this for 15 years.Decided to do something about it.Now it's all booked,bought and paid for.We are leaving Seattle 6/23/05 for 7 days up the inside passage.I am as excited as can be.
I too would rather drive it but I'm afraid that will never happen.

Enjoy the trip, Stan!! Hope the weather cooperates, a friend of mine took that trip in June and it rained the entire time, he saw very little due to fog and low clouds, he was really disappointed. July or August would be a better time for any thing outdoors in the PNW...June is too ify. :cry:

Poor Man's Cruise/Drive Alaska trip

An aside re Alaska Cruise for those who either don't wish to spend the money or want to drive (or both).. It ain't a luxury cruise, but is certainly an adventure!

A "poor man's cruise" can be had by taking a ferry from Vancouver BC to Nanaimo BC (on Vancouver Island), or take the ferry from Port Angeles WA (on the Olympic Penninsula) to Victoria BC (bottom end of Vancouver Island) and drive to Port Hardy at the top/North end of Vancouver Island. Trip is about 4.5 hrs from Nanaimo, about 6hrs from Victoria.

Get aboard the ferry to Prince Rupert which, twice a week, motors up the Inside Passage, stops a couple of small communities on the way. Ferry ride takes about 18 hours - not as fast as a cruise ship, and not as luxurious, though there are some services and you can rent a small cabin aboard. (which I recommend!)

Get off at Prince Rupert, (gets in late at night usually, so plan on an overnight in PR) then head east on hwy 16 to Kitwanga  (maybe 4hrs) turn left (north) on 37 and head up into the Yukon territory, then when you are ready turn west to Alaska.

Still a "fur piece" and some time spent driving, but some great scenery, and a way to have both driving and shipboard in the same trip.

This trip requires some co-ordination because the ferry from Port Hardy runs just a couple of times a week. The ferries from Vancouver or Port Angeles run several times a day.

Spent my honeymoon in '83 on part of that trip, started in Anecortes to Vancouver, then drove up the Island, did some salmon fishing, clamming, crabbing and camping and back again.....2 weeks in all. :wink:

I took a cruise once to Ensanada. I don't gamble, and I don't drink, so it was boring at times. But I do eat, and there was plenty of food. Ensanada was a cess pool though. Why did I spend the money to go to a third world country? :?

I'll have to side with Badnews Bob!  I spent 2 1/2 years "cruising" (I was on a guided missle light cruiser, so it had to be cruising!)  Got off in '65 and haven't been back!   :shock:

I still drive and take my wife on long trips.  It's 25 miles to Wallie World!  :eek:

Yea. Uncle Sam paid for 2 1/2 years of cruising for me too. Two aircraft carriers. I was a airplane mechanic on the old A1's.

Quick & Tallyho,

Spent 5 years on Vancouver Island & 6 in Vancouver, nice country did alot of cmping & hikeing through that time great country nice scenery. Even had a cow elk stick her head in our tent early one july morning & then snorted & took off down the creek, that was up near Lake Cowachin it think, had some black bears tear up one camp but that was the only ecounter with them we had, miss that country but not the cost of living, I'll have to take my son back up one day to do some camping, I'm sure there are alot of pristine undeveloped places stiil on the Island. Happy Moms day to all the moms out there

Well I'll tell you, having lived in Ketchikan and seeing what the cruise industry has done to the place plus all the others they come to, I hope you like jewelry stores!  They took a good, working downtown with charm and interest and turned it into side by side jewelry stores.  I'm glad I live now where the tour ships can't get in.

If you want to see SE Alaska, you can catch the ferry (Alaska Marine Highway) in Bellingham, Washington and ride it all the way up to Haines.  They used to have a deal where you could get off at any town along the way and visit, then get on the next ferry going your way.  Don't know if that's still available.  They have staterooms and the chow ain't bad.  Cafeteria style, though.

For a cheaper trip drive up through Canada to Prince Rupert, then catch the ferry there.  Or ride the BC ferries up from Nanaimo, as Tallyho suggests.  For a really great drive, go up the Cassiar Highway (follow Tallyho's directions) to Atlin Junction, then follow the Alaska Highway back down to Dawson Creek.  Veer off to the East and go down through Banf and Jasper and you will have seen some of the prettiest scenery you are apt to see anywhere.

Leave the firearms behind unless you are going to pay for the registration.  Flintlocks are exempt, though.

I took some .22s up to Canada in March for my kids and I to plink with. (They live on Vancouver Island with their mother).

It cost me $50 to go throught the paper work at the border (i.e. registered them) and about 1/2 hr delay.

If you decide to take guns to Canada, also get forms from US Customs before you go so that you can get them back across the border with no hassle. It isn't likely to happen, but it could 'cuz the rules have changed since 9-11 about bringing guns into the US... a form (free) from your local customs guys (or cops) or a bill of sale for your guns will alleviate that potential hassle.
