Here's the new stock set mounted on my 204 Ruger.....I chose it because the recoil pad is thin and the 204 has no recoil.

Thanks! Don't know for sure, I compared it to a standard Handi stock and it's the same contour, so I think someone just checkered it. I've seen a fiddlebacked butt stock before, Magical Marlin had one for sale on a 22Lr Sportster at RFC a few months back, but he want $300 for it with a 4-12x WTE scope, I should bought it, but didn't......

Hmmm, makes me think that H&R had a special run of em at one time....This one was originally on a .243 but that's about all the previous owners knew about it as he wasn't the original owner.

Bang Off....you would have had to outbid my $250!!!! I wanted em bad!!!

Well, I certainly didn't want it on any of my heavy kickers, either! That's why it's on the 204 Ruger!  Did you buy the 17hmr new? Is the pad an Uncle Mike's like mine says on it?

Quick, this is a bit off topic, but still in the general area of stocks.  You posted an answer to my question on the Shooter's forum website.  See below:

"You can buy a "pallet" wood walnut monte carlo butt stock from H&R, part #R00603 for $36 plus shipping or #S00880 for $32 which is a pistol grip straight stock like those on the shotguns. The come with swivel stud and black recoil pad."

I ordered the stock today to go along with the mannlicher stock I ordered last week.  The lady at H&R said that the monte carlo stock would not work with the iron sights that came with my buffalo classic and that I would have to use a scope with the marte carlo stock.  Since I wanted to use the original sights, I ordered the straight stock even though I like the mante carlo stock better.  I figure she is probably correct, but I thought I would check with you guys to be sure.

Is she correct about the monte carlo stock?

Thank you,

Yes and no!!!!  The monte carlo stocks come with different heights. For example: When I got my mannlicher forend, I mounted it on one of my 45-70 barrels and a frame from my .280 remington. The .280 had a standard pallet wood stock on it, but it was too high to look thru the WGRS peep sight that was on that barrel, so I compared it to a laminated pallet wood stock that I took off my 204 Ruger Handi, and it was about ½" lower at the comb, so that's the butt stock that is on my mannlicher 45-70 barrel. So H&R has at least 2 different heights of monte carlo stocks, plus the other stocks that have even lower combs as on the pardner, but still aren't straight stocks.

Now MSP will come on and explain all this for us!!!

Does anyone know if there are names for the different Monte carlo stocks?  And which one would still allow me to see the stock sights on my BC?  I would really rather have the Monte Carlo stock if it will work with my stock sights.

If it won't, the straight stock is the one like on the shotguns and is larger (taller) than the original one on the BC and pad that is a bit softer, right?

I hope what I am about to share is not sacrilege to this group, and will not get me banished, but just to let you in on what I am working on.  My aunt is an artist and I went to Africa last summer.  She wanted to paint a rifle to commemorate my trip with pictures of me with my trophies on the stock.  She has done several of these and she was going to do it on a cheap BB gun, but I thought if she was going to go to all that effort I wanted it on something special.  And I love any excuse to buy a gun.  So I started looking around for an inexpensive rifle that I also thought was cool in and of itself.   I want to be able to use this rifle for bison, black bear, etc. and I want to use the original sights.  The Monte Carlo stock would give her more room to work.  I figure if I am not happy with it when she is done, I can always replace the stock.  But if she does a great job, I want it to be functional as well as a display piece.  I am a believer that guns should be shot.

Thoughts?

Sorry Quick, I don't have the exact answer to your stock question/dilemma. To me it sounds as if the stock makers had some sloppy tolerances when they drilled the holes for the stock bolts (through holes for the through bolts?) or the angles they sanded on the mating surface of the buttstock where it meets the bolt was different on your stocks. I don't see H&R going through the work of having different stock comb heights other than Monte Carlo and non Monte Carlo  on adult sized stocks. I have heard if the final mating surface angle of the buttstock is different in a couple of otherwise identical stocks and they are attached to the receiver with through bolts, as are the H&R's, the bolt will actually bend a bit and pull the stock into alignment with the mating surfaces.  (spring is a better word because the bolt returns to straight when the strain is removed). Any stockmakers out there or anyone who may have more info on this?....<><....

Msp, I layed one stock on top of the other and lined up the bottom contours, the only difference was the height of the comb. the laminated wood stock's comb is approx ½" lower. Everything else looks identical. :?

Got the mannlicher forearm today.  It looks great.  Very cool addition.  I went with the straight stock.  You have to love how easy these guns are to work with.
