daddywpb: If the boss says you can upgrade, and the vendor is okay with the upgrade I would recommend it. Before Christmas I told my boss that I wanted a 60C from Santa. At first she did not understand why I wanted another gps, because I already had the Legend and a combination gps/fishfinder. When I brought up the additional memory I won her over. She has a good understanding of computers and the value of RAM, and hard drive storage.
Her wifely question was, Are you going to be satisfied in two years with the amount of map storage on the 60C? She knows that my retirement job can take me across the Western United States. She knows that I was very happy with the base map in the old Legend when I made use of it out of State a couple of years ago. Yes, I would be looking for more memory in two years. Will a laptop, a pc cord, and a couple of CD's do the job? Yes, but..........
I recommended the 60C to a friend a year ago. He is getting ready to retire his old GPSIII-Plus. It would allow him to load the base maps for most of California and part of Western Nevada. That is a lot of country.
I suspect that you could load all of Florida in it. Your City Select software will work in it. City Select is more detailed then MapSource USA topo, but I think you should be able to load a lot of country into it.
The early 60C's were shipped with a two cords for pc's. I was reading something yesterday that left me thinking they are shipping it with only the mini usb to standard usb cord now. They only shipped the 76C with one cord and I purchased one direct from >>>>>>>>>>>. Not Garmin who sells their cord for twice the amount.
I believe you will see better reception with the 60C. The 60C and the 76C share the same antenna. They are just packaged different. I have done a lot of side-by-side comparisons with the 76C and the old Legend with the patch antenna over the last few months.
Assuming, the screen and the bars that indicate signal strength on the Legend and the 76C measure the same values, the 76C (60C) has a stronger antenna. Or is the newer, faster processor in the 76C (60C) responsible for the stronger reception. The two gps units maybe receiving the same number of satellites, but the bars on the 76C indicate a stronger signal. Another advantage the 60C (76C) has over the Legend C is that it can except an external antenna. An external antenna will drain power from your batteries so you need to be prepared for the extra load. Garmin's antenna's are pricy, you can find after market ones on e-bay. I have read about guys running around in the woods with the external antenna clip to a hat or a pack. I keep thinking about buying one but do I really want a cord hanging on my gear that can get snagged in the brush? But it can be managed and of value if you are hunting in a jungle. I should not that I have seen professionals running landlines with a commercial gps who have a battery powered antenna on a packframe with additional batteries. Serious business.[/u]
Another observation on reception. I do a fair amount of hiking with a friend who has a GPs72. He carrys his unit in his hands exposed to the sky. I carry mine in a pouch on my side. His is losing the satellites all the time in the same cover mine is still receiving. Both units have the same antenna. But the 60C and the 76C has newer processors. Or do I maintain my batteries in a better state?
