New 7600 25-06 Gray Laminate
« on: May 08, 2005, 04:53:33 PM »
I just picked up the Remington 7600 25-06 in gray laminate that I had on layaway for several months. For the first time in my life I am disappointed in a new Remington. That gray laminate stock is just plain ugly. I have the 7600 35 Remington carbine and the 7600 rifle in 35 Whelen both with walnut stocks. I always wanted a 7600 in .257 Roberts so when the 25-06 came along I figured close enough. But boy is this stock ugly. Well I guess if it does not grow on me I will have to buy a replacement stock from Remington. MIKE.

Exactly what's ugly about it?  Is it poorly finished and not fitted well?  Poorly executed checkering?  Or, do you just not like the laminated stock as well as you like the plain walnut stocks?  Please advise.   I rather like how the blk/grey laminates look on stainless guns such as what Ruger & Marlin have recently done.  Dunno if they'd look as good on blued guns.  Other than in black/white web photos, I've never seen the Rem 7600 laminate models.

BTW, just this past Friday, I ordered the very last .35 Rem 7600 carbine that Grices had in stock from the 2004 special run.  I'm hoping I'll be pleased w/ the quality of the gun as to fit/finish and etc.  Actually, though I don't need it, I'm somewhat considering getting the .35 Whelen 7600 also.  Can you tell me how your .35 Rem shoots?

Mike103,
I know what you are saying. It is hard to describe, but the stocks aren't the greatest looking in my opinion. Fit and finish was good on the rifles I saw.

Big, The fit and finish is fine. It's just ugly. I have a friend that has the 700 gray laminate with a SS barrel and it looks great. I thing the blue and gray do not mix.

You will love the 35 Rem carbine and will be very surprised how well it shoots!

257 Roberts, I guess I am still looking for the 7600 257 with a walnut stock. If you find one let me know. MIKE.

Found this pic on another website.  I assume your gun looks like this one.  Hard to tell from the pic... Are the colors brownish or more grey/black/silver?

Big, I saw a picture on the web just like that on and thought that the stock would have a brown tone to it. Well it does not. It is gray/black and I guess a little silver.

My barber keeps putting something on my hair.....that turns it grey!  Maybe your "new"  7600 is getting older......

Your right......that's one ugly stock........

Well she might be ugly but we will have to see if she can shoot. I have a 3X9 Nikon for it I just need rings and bases. I will give a range report in a few weeks. MIKE.

I guess beauty or ugly is in the eye of the beholder.  I don't think they look all that bad.  I personally would take a laminate stock over any composite stock.  True, I definitely think it would look better in stainless (are you paying attention Remington) or maybe even have the barrel and receiver blackened (what ever those coatings are called, you know, like what is on an AR).  A good looking rifle is nice to have, but accuracy, precession, ease of use and comfort are far more important.  If it turns out it is a 1 MOA rifle or better, I think it will start looking a whole lot "prettier" to you.  And if you still can't get used to the laminate stock, Wenig's custom gun stocks can make you a plain-jane replacement stock to  the prettiest walnut stock you've ever seen, all depending on your wallet thickness, of course.

Actually, it's probably a pretty good color for tree stand hunting in deep woods......I think it would blend in well..........I bet she'll shoot good too!

Let us know!
