Extractor Question ???

Why would you choose a 1911 with a "External Extractor" (Smith & Wesson SW1911) as apposed to the "Regular Extractor" (Springfield Loaded models)? I have a "Springfield Stainless PX9151L Loaded Pistol" on layaway, but I also like the "Smith & Wesson SW1911 #108282". I just don't know why someone would choose one over the other, as far as the extractors go! Thanks!

NYH,
The original design extractor has been working well for almost a century. With that said, the extractor on the 1911 platform has always been considered by some as a weak point. The extractor must be properly heat treated and tuned to function properly. I've never had a broken one, but they are easy to remove and replace should tuning or replacment be required. Some regard the external, spring loaded extractor as an improvement. I'm not so sure. I could live with either one though. They both do the same job. Guess it just depends on your point of view.

I own and have owned a few kimbers with external ext. and after shooting them id have to vote for the internal ive just had less extraction problem with the extractor the way Sam designed it.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it.  The original design of the 1911 extractor is excellent.  I have never broken on and have never had an extractor failure.  Both the Springfield and the S&W are great pistols and I don't think the extractor design detracts from either pistol.  JMHO.  Mikey.

Sam who? Did what? You know better than that. The 1911 was invented by John Browning in 1904 and then modified to become the Model 1911. Sam Colt died in 1873 just before the SAA was released. If Sam had designed it the port and controls would have been on the oposite sides. Sam Colt was left handed. That's why the loading gate of a SAA and all the copys have the gate on the rt side so the left hand stays on the gun.

From what I've been told by people on a few other sights, Kimber's that have "External Extractors" are known for having extractor problems. I heard that Kimber is on its fourth design with their "External Extractors". I guess the Smith & Wesson design works a lot better. Having said that about both the Kimber and Smith & Wesson, the only experience I have had with any 1911 was shooting my friends Colt!

I have 1911's with both.  Each one works just fine.  I wouldn't make a choice based on the extractor.

Thanks for all your replies! :D  I really do appreciate it. Like I said, I have a "Springfield Stainless PX9151L Loaded Pistol" on layaway. I think I'm going to get the Smith & Wesson SW1911 model 108282 instead. Its not that I don't like the Springfield, I just like the Smith & Wesson better. I wasn't sure about the different types of extractor's. When I first started looking at 1911's a lot of people told me to stay away from 1911's that have "External Extractors". Now from what I'm hearing, its Kimber that has the external extractor problems. I guess Kimber is on their fourth design. From what I've been told the Smith & Wesson design is a lot better. I also like the "firing pin safety" on the Smith & Wesson. I read an article about it and its totally different from the Colt series 80 design. It only has one moving part and is disengaged by the grip safety only instead of the grip safety and the trigger! What are your thoughts on this? Again thanks for all the information!

The Kimbers now incorporate a firing pin safety, if you feel like you want one. It too is of the Swartz design. That is to say it is deactivated by the grip safety, unlike the series 80 Colts that incorporate it into the trigger mechanism. This explains the Colt series 80 trigger pull. I prefer the earlier Kimbers and Colts without the firing pin safety. It's just another solution to a nonproblem.

Thanks Savage and everyone else for that matter. I swapped the Springfield I had on layaway for a Smith & Wesson SW1911 #108282! I just really like the S&W.
