New S&W 500 today
« on: May 09, 2005, 05:11:19 PM »
Well I picked up a new S&W 500 with a 8 3/8 barrel, my 4 inch S&W 500 wanted a bigger brother.  :D

Alex,

i thought you had a 8 3/8" first and then got the 4"?

i'm still wanting one, but i'll wait and find a good deal on a used one...

Chris my first 500 MAG was the BFR. Then I got a S&W 8 3/8. Trades the S&W 8 3/8 and kept the BFR. Then I got a S&W 4 inch and traded the BFR. Now I went out and got another S&W in 8 3/8.  So now I have both a 4 inch and a 8 3/8.

I had considered the 460 S&W but the 500 MAG works better for my needs. I guess I am just a 500 MAG nut.

The bad part is, I don't know which one to shoot when I go to the range. I have to take both and then I have to clean both.  :-D

jro45, What is the biggest bullet you shot from your 500 MAG.
I have a bunch of 575 gr. cast bullets coming from Ranger Rich in Alaska.
I have shot about 200 of them already and they are a power house.  :D

Redhawk,
Look at the positive side: you only have to dig out one size of bore brush. :)

You got that right. But the fun of shooting both out weigh the cleaning part.

Chris, I have a Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull already and the 500Mag is a good step up from the 454 Casull. With the problems they are having with the 460 S&W, I don't think it will be out soon and I really do not want to have problems later down the road if I got one.
Also I did not see the real advantage over the 454 Casull. And if I really wanted something big the 500 Mag would fit the bill.  :D

You guys are crazy.  I shot a 500 today with "minimum to maximum" loads.  They all hurt.  I told the owner that this is not fun and handed the canon back.  Call me what ever you want to but I do not see any use for one of them.

I've owned and fired several handguns that were far more unpleasant to shoot than the 500.  All of the afore mentioned were of smaller calibers.
I like my 500 hand cannons. :D  :D

So how does the 500 S&W compare to a 375 JDJ with heavy loads?  I saw a 10" at my local gunshop, and was very surprised at how balanced it felt.

I would have to say the 500 MAG shines above the 375 JDJ with heavy loads. Plus you are talking about 2 totaly different shooting plat formes.  JMHO  :D

Redhawk1, I've got to ask, you were real high on the BFR at one time, so why did you get rid of it? I had kinda glanced at them at one time, but as soon as I learned of the 1 year warranty I quickly dispensed with any notion of buying one.... :D

I still like the BFR, but my buddy made me an offer I could not refuse. My buddy wanted the BFR for about a year now and I gave into him.  I am thinking of getting a BFR in 45-70. The year warranty does not bother me, I think the guns are well made.  But I must be honest, I just got a Freedom Arms Premier Grade model 83 in 454 Casull and the workmanship far out shines the BFR.  :D

Tusker, I got the gun in May, I would of loved to have gotten the knife. But I did get a free bandoler holster for the 500 Mag though from S&W.  :D

jro45, I was never without a 500 Mag. I still have 2 of them.  A BFR in 500 Mag and a 4 inch S&W 500 Mag. I did also get the 460 Mag. The 460 is what I will use for our handgun deer season though.  :D

The S&W 500 Mag it alone is the gun. I know you still have the BFR that shoots the 500 mag. And the 4" 500 mag. The 460 mag you never got rid of did you? Sometimes it hard to keep up with your trading and selling of the 500 mag. I must miss some of your forms. :D

I still have myS&W 460 Mag, it is going to be my handgun for this years handgun deer season. :D  My BFR in 500 Mag is what I used on my bear hunt to Maine. My S&W 4 inch 500 Mag is my back up gun in Alaska and in bear country.  :D
