Mec 650 jr. crimp issue
« on: February 16, 2003, 02:28:06 PM »
I am new to shotgun reloading, but not knew to reloading.

I can not seem to get a decent crimp.  For the most part I am crushing the hulls.  It has to be an adjustment.

Here is the adjustments I have questions about.
1.   Near the bottom of the reloader, for 2.75 inch shells, Which hole is the bolt in?
2.   Do you adjust the final crimp stage like suggested on http://www.ballisticproducts.com/TechInfo/mecadjust/mecadj.htm
3.   Any other hints?

You don't say if you are using a new or used loader. I'll assume it is used because the factory usually does a fair job of setting the new ones. On my 600 jr. the bottom holes are used. You could try this for easy adjustment: take a factory round and put it in the crimp station. Apply light pressure and adjust the cam and/or crimp punch until you can bottom out the press handle.Kind of like setting the seating depth of a bullet with a dummy round. I do this after I take mine appart for cleaning and it usually gets it pretty close. Then just tweak it from there. Just a note: the length of your shot column can also have an effect on your crimp. If it sits to high in the hull you can also crush the case. This can be corrected by adjusting the wad pressure.
Just another worthless opinion!!

It should be as described in the owner's manual which you can download from MEC:
http://www.mecreloaders.com/OwnerManuals/OwnerManuals.asp

Yes, I have found that the directions from Ballistics Products to be useful, since they were lifted from the MEC owner's manual.  There are two adjustments you may need to change.  One is the crimping die, and the other is the cam.

It is a old non-used reloader.  I had to do a conversion from a 20ga.

Using a factory round as a starting pont sounds good.
