How do I go about this?
Ed's TC for $209 and have it reamed. If so, by who and what would it cost?

Your most economical route would probably be to order one from TC custom shop http://www.foxridgeoutfitters.com/section.cfm?section=16 Depending on finish and length it works out to be a pretty good deal unless you want iron sights which are extra on the custom barrels. They come drilled and tapped for scope though.

$80.00 more to have the K- Hornet or just go with a factory Hornet barrel?
Perhaps another Handi barrel.

Wondering... Is a K any louder and how long of a barrel is needed to gain the extra push.
I'd like to keep it short yet quiet.
Any other cartridge suggestions?
The 17HMR won't be enough.

I think the advantages of going K would be more for positive headspacing and case life. Although you would gain a little velocity.

You could buy a factory barrel, and see what OTT charges to do a custom rechamber. . .

I would not worry about the K hornet to be honest . My factory 22 hornet 24 inch blue barrel shoots average 5/8 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards with a best group of .280 with 40- grain v-max and 1680 powder .

I found a .22 LR carbine barrel at a pawn shop and had my 'smith rechamber it to K-Hornet for about $170. It shoots MOA or better even while fireforming brass. It does .223 &.224" bullets fine. Rimfires are supposed to have a .223" bore as I understand it. Look around for a good price on a .22 LR barrel and start from there.

Tad,
Rimmed case like the Hornet head space on the rim, not the shoulder. That is the biggest advantage to rimmed cases in the break guns.

Catfish, I'll have to respectfully dissagree on the head spacing issue. Yes, rimmed cases can head space on the rim, BUT, they shouldn't. Especially in a Contender or Encore, bottleneck cases should be sized to head space on the shoulder, not the rim. If not, you're just asking for miss-fires, poor accuracy, short case life, etc...The advantage to rimmed cases is that they work much better with the extractor. Just my opinion, but I think it's shared by many who know a lot more than me. I suffered through a lot of tough lessons many years ago with my first .

If you have a local gunsmith that has the reamer on hand it may be less expensive to have it reamed for the K-hornet. A while back my favorite smith had lined up a few K jobs and rented the reamer. I passed on it because the rifle shot near perfect as it was so I left it alone. I believe I was quoted $75 but as you know, shop prices vary greatly.

Going the K-hornet route does offer some advantages though. In addition to getting more velocity, brass life is actually better with the less tapered sides. The rim does make extraction trouble free on break open style actions but it need not be used for headspacing. Headspacing on the shoulder is usually better from an accuracy stand point and the sharper one on the K makes that an easier job.

Howdy, I have two K Hornets & they both shoot great with good case life.
I have a custom Bullberry 21" bull barrel SS that will shoot 1/2" or less at 100 yards. I also have a 14" SS 22 LR barrel that was rechambered for $45 to 22 K Hornet & it will shoot 3/4" @ 100 yards. I can load the K hornet to close to 3000 fps with Hornady 35 Grain V max if desired but I usually shoot Lil gun or W296 with a 40 grain bullet to around 2800 FPS for best accuracy. I usually retire cases after 6 firings but have gotten up to 12 firings while testing a few years ago when care is taken. I usaully fireform at around 2500 Fps & get great accuracy while doing so. I have a Ruger 22 Hornet model 77 SS that I will be sending out to have rechambered to 22 K Hornet soon. Yep, I guess I am a K Hornet fan! Good shooting! Someone correct me if I am wrong. I have never donme this conversion (Hornet to K-Hornet) but I have read of quite a few on the NEF forum that have. ALL of them did it them selves in about 10 min and none have anything but good to say about it afterwards.

It is my understanding, too, that rimed cases DO headspace on the rim, never had a single missfire on any of mine and have owned many rimed calibers.

That said, It seems to me the only disadvantage to the DIY job is a slightly shorter neck on the case, since you cannot set the barrel back.

This has never been an issue to those that did it.

For $209 and another 45-75 you could buy a complete H&R Hornet and have about $150 left over. Most guys have gotten exceptional accuracy with theirs. Most have been easily sub MOA with handloads.
