need advice on Vihtavuori, 45 ACP load

Just bought my first pound of Vihtavuori 320.

I hope to use it for 45 acp with 185 gr LSWC, for target work.

Manual shows that a start charge of 5.4 will yield 971 FPS with a 180 gr LSWC.  This is too fast for my purpose, and I am nervous about going lower than manual starting load without some previous examples.

Gun will be a 1911 Kimber Super Match.  

My go to load was bulleye with a load of 3.3-3.4 now it is a light load of 231.  

I was told that the Vihtavuori will be much cleaner...at this speed I imagine that bullseye and 231 will be cleaner also!

HappyHunter:  My 3rd Edition of the Vihtavuori manual states, for the 185 gn Intercast plain based swc, starting at 5.9 gn of VV320 for 1034'/sec and going to 6.5 for 1105'/sec.  HTH.  Mikey.

Looking at the VihtaVuori website, with their free reloading data, it looks like 310 might be a better choice for light loads with the 185gr bullets. Even though I have not yet found a better powder for light loads in 45ACP than Bullseye, the 310 is closer to the burn rate of Bullseye. Are you having leading problems with that light load of Bullseye you were using? If you normally clean your guns between range sessions, powder residue should not be a problem unless it causes malfunctions. I have no problems using Bullseye in my 1911s or Glocks. I have put over 500rds in a session thru my guns, without cleaning. Let us know how the VihtaVouri shoots.

I loaded 185 LSWC over 5.0, 5.4 and 5.9 grains of VV-320 with WLP primers.

All where shot from Kimber 1911 super match on a sandbag rest one handed from 50 feet.

5.0 had a group 2-1/2 to 3 inch group

5.4 had a clover leaf 10 shot group!

5.9 started to open up a bit but not bad.  

All loads where uncomfortable from my target gun,  I felt that I was slamming the frame with heavy loads.  These loads are all heavy compared to my Target loads of bulleye or 231.  I will not change to this for target work but will consider it for my 220 sig.

Maybe the VV-310 will work better...?

This may be a great powder for my Sig 220.
