Heavy Rings?
« on: May 11, 2005, 10:23:50 PM »
Finally got my scope mounted on my Encore. I ordered the Weaver base which was all aluminum, and the Burris Signature Zee medium height rings. I'll have to say I was a little surprised at how much the rings weighed. I would guess the rings alone weigh as much, if not outweigh, the scope itself.

So... leading me up to my question... would aluminum rings hold a scope without moving around, or has anyone tried the titanium rings? They look a little pricey but would knock about 10oz off the weight of the gun. (Just kind of thinking out loud here.) I have to wonder if aluminum rings would be strong enough.

Here's a rule of thumb that I follow:
On aluminum bases, like the Wever's, use aluminum rings....like Leupold's vertical split rings.
On steel bases, use steel rings, like the Burris'

That makes sense. The aluminum rings are strong enough then and no one's had problems with them?

Not me, not once. I use the Leupy vertical split rings. Can get them at any Walmart.

Another good thing about the vertically split aluminum rings is its easier (and cheaper) to mount three rings on the base.  The set up is very light and also very strong!
