45-70 factory loads
« on: May 13, 2005, 04:15:15 AM »
k so i dont reload and probably wont.  i have a 45-70 guide gun and got lucky finally n drew a bear permit in wi this year.  i am going to be using my recurve bow but will have the guide gun hangin on my tree as well.  bout the only factory ammo i see at the big merchandisers is the 300 gr hollow points.   what else is there that is out for a guy like me to buy?  i think im looking for a better penetrating bullet than what the 300 gr hp offers.  correct me if im wrong in that assumption.  i do get good accuracy from the 300 gr...but aint shot other loads to compare.

btw i traded in a winchester 94 chambered in 444 marlin to get the guide gun.  what a piece of junk that 94 was.  the design was toatly wrong for that big bore.  it would feed rem 240 gr hollow points only and they are about as accurate as a pea shooter.  then i tried the hornady 265 gr....wow i could hit anything i set my mind to.  but the problem was at .005" longer....they wouldnt feed from the mag.  i called winchester and they said they designed it for use with the rem load.  and that it wouldnt be wise to shave the part that lifts in the action.  i had a gunsmith call all over the country to find out if thats possible...no answer.  not being into reloading or anything ......i chose not to try to reseat every hornady load to get them to feed.  well in short im glad i got the guide gun....it is 10 times the gun.

dont get me wrong the old model 94s are champs in the 30-30 and such....took my first buck with one.  they just nevershould have went 1/2 way into trying for big bore in it i guess.

Nothing wrong with standard Remingtion 405 SP's at bow distance either.  Very mild load, usually accurate, and penetrating enough for bear inside 100 yards.

thanks.  think ill give the pmc a look.

for some reason i shy away from remington factory loads.  granted its a low percentage over all.  i've had 6 missfires with rem loads between shotgun and rifle.  yeah its been within thousands of rounds...but it is the only brand ive ever had a missfire.  2 in the same box of .444, 2 -12 guage shells, 1- 7mm rem mag, 1 -45/70, and 1-22-250.

im probably the only person alive with this complaint, and like i said its reallow percentage, but i know it aint the guns that did it.

The PMC 350 grain ammo is less than $20 at the Sportsmans Guide.

Conley has quite a selection fairly reasonably priced.
