beaver question/ any thoughts
« on: May 14, 2005, 05:50:28 AM »

I think this was the sixth beaver I caught at this set.  It was the third one in a row that was caught by the tail in a 330 bodygripper.  Any ideas as to why?  I catch one once in awhile by the tail but three in a row in the same trap is a bit odd.

I am thinking that the bank the trap was set in front of was too steep and the beaver were going up the bank in a different spot and backing down the bank the trap was set in front of to eat the bait thus backing into the trap.

The reason the first three were caught perfect was the trap was set up higher before the water started fall.

Steve i dont think that is  what happened as ive seen beaver climp up a  perpendicular bank about 5 feet high.  They go where they want.. but it would be interesting to figure out why you caught the beaver that way..  i know some fellows say a beaver comes up to set and for some reason turns and tail sets  coni off and catches bvr by tail...

Steve,I get some that back into my castor mounds every year.It doesn't happen till it gets warmer.I think it may have something to do with water temps(only a theory in progress)If I have one back in ,that day,I will have several that do it---figure that out.

Lee I should have clarified myself a little more.  I think the bank was too steep in relation to the distance of the trap from said bank.  I couldnt get the trap as far away from the bank as I would have liked.  It seems to me like the further away from the bank the more readily they will swim into the trap.

I know they can climb some pretty steep banks as well.  If the beaver did in fact go around this trap they would have had an almost vetical climb.  The bank was really steep except for where I set the trap.  It was an old beaver run going up the bank.

Heck they may have even went over the trap then back into it.  I was just thinking that out of the three that one would have knocked it over even though I set my traps pretty solid.

I wonder if in springtime, they back in to keep an eye out for the beaver that made the mound. From the scars and bites I've seen beaver take their fighting pretty serious.
