NEF sportster tinkering

howdy gang,
since i'm finished tinkering w/my 10/22s for a while, my 17hmr sorster has become my current target of interest. of course i'll gladly accept all the advice i can get and YES, it is or will be post over at GBO as well. heres the issue: the lug on the barrel has a point (LOL-NEF quality control issues) and its been digging into the forearm and not creating a very good barrel to forearm seat(SEE PICTURES). (1)now, who has had this problem w/theirs? (2)the O-ring trick will keep the bottom of the lug from touching the inside base of the forend, correct? (3)should i stone the lug flat? (4)the O-ring trick doesnt allow the barrel to clear the sides of the forend...how many of you have found that sanding the channel out and getting a "free float" has helped w/accuracy? currently, the rifle gets about 2" groups @100yds. i KNOW it can do better than this. OK! sock it to me!!  GRACIAS :)

oops...i'll have to figure out how to post pics here..dammit!

btw, this has been posted at RFC already and yes i'm using the proper O-ring size: 9/16ODX3/8IDX3/32THICK

Your IMG tags need to be changed slightly, after the URL...

The synthetic forend either needs to be sanded or use a different "O"ring or even a rubber grommet in the bottom of the forend hole, whatever it takes to get the barrel floated. Some barrel studs are not welded to the barrel square, so it makes the forend crooked on the barrel, also.

thanks on the pic info...got em working now.

yes, the lug may not be welded perfectly straight, but at this point im a little more concerned about that "lip" or "deformity" on the bottom of the lug and if it'll make a difference in accuracy at all.

thanks a bunch!

Here's a thread from the centerfire forum that may be of help to you, although the majority of the posts pertain to the wood forend of the Handi, the same principles apply.

I think a good starting point would be to file and stone the "point/bump/thingy" off the forearm attachment lug and get it flat and smooth to start with, don't make it any shorter, just flat and smooth....<><....
