So I'll try this question in this forum
« on: May 16, 2005, 09:20:37 AM »
I asked this in the medium bore forum, and actually ended up more confused than when I started. I just purchased a model 70 featherweight in 6.5x55 Swedish. I want to get a synthetic stock for it but I can't figure out if its a long or short action. There seems to be a plethora of opinions but no conclusive word. So I'll try it here, thanks. FCB

the 308 cartridge is USUALLY the last short action cartridge which has a over all length of 2.800 max.  The 6.5x55 has a over a;ll length of 3.062 which would make it a LONG  action hope this will help. :D    JIM

I have a Featherweight Classic in 6.5X55. It is on a long action. It is also my current favorite hunting rifle. Great rifle and cartridge combination. I find it a perfect tool for hunting whitetail deer at ant sane distance. Good luck with yours. You have a treasure! 8)

Look at the gun weights on this page, there is a pattern here. These are current production guns. Older guns do differ.

I cannot answer your question directly. BUT I think the answers being given are too simplistic and not necessarily right. There is no reason the 6.5x55 can't be made to work in a short action. The 7x57 and .257 Roberts both use longer cases but work in short actions and are chambered ONLY in them by Remington.

To truly answer your question what you need to know is what is the length of your action and then someone who KNOWS not suspects what action they have to tell you the length of theirs. Most likely there will be about 1/2" difference between long and short.

Now I'm not a Winchester guy and have no clue. I don't even know if Winchester makes or has made a short action. But just saying a 6.5 is too long to be made in a short action is just plain bad info.
